The Patriot Update (1.14)
A Revere High School Community Newsletter

Monday January 23rd, 2023
Volume 1, Issue 14
Hello Patriots!
We are officially half-way through the 2022-2023 school year! Monday 1/23 marks the start of Semester 2, which brings new semester and quarter classes for most students. PowerSchool accurately reflects courses. At the same time as we transition to Semester 2 classes, teachers are busy working to close out grades from Semester 1. I want to acknowledge that it is a challenge to be simultaneously finishing grades for Semester 1 (due Wednesday at 8pm) and prepping to meet new classes of students Monday Morning! It is also a very busy time of year for Guidance Counselors, who are simultaneously working to submit college recommendations, while juggling scheduling requests for the start of Semester 2, and beginning to prepare for the Course Registration Season to help students get their courses set for next year. Everyone is working hard at RHS, but I wanted to use this space to specifically call out the ways this time of year asks a lot of our educators.
The focus of this week's memo is about the Course Registration Process, so that students and guardians know everything they need to in order to make informed decisions about their Academic Program. Now is the time to be thoughtful about what classes you want to take to achieve the goals you have for yourself after high school. Our Guidance Director Ms. Finn and her team have spent countless hours over the past few months trying to improve the course registration process for students. Our hope is that we can highlight some of that work in this memo, so that everyone feels well-prepared to pick classes for next year.
As always, please reach out with questions or ideas for this memo. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
Christopher T. Bowen, Principal

Advanced Placement Courses
AP courses are THE MOST DIFFICULT and RIGOROUS courses RHS offers. They usually require MORE WORK and MORE TIME than regular classes. Taking AP Courses AND Doing Well in them, can help you
- Earn College Credit: Your AP score could earn you college credits before you even set foot on campus.
- Stand Out to Colleges: “AP” on your high school transcript shows colleges you’ve tackled college-level work.
You can view all the AP Courses offered at RHS. Be sure to visit current AP teachers for AP Info Sessions. At the info session, the AP teachers can sign your AP Form! AP Forms are due by February 3rd!
- You must meet the prerequisites for the course you wish to take (You need to complete FTA to take AP Calculus AB for example)
- To take an AP course, you MUST ATTEND an AP INFO SESSION for the AP course you want to take. You must also complete the AP FORM.
- Talk to your current teachers and guidance counselor to discuss which AP courses you should take and learn about more about the courses.
Guidance Counselor Information
At RHS, the Guidance Counselors are the go-to person for all questions about academics and scheduling. Each student is assigned a guidance counselor by their last name. We hope this information is useful for you, if you need to reach out to your student's counselor.

John's Hopkins Global Health Leaders Conference
Revere High Students who are interested in global health and medicine are encouraged to apply to The Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopkins University. This is a virtual summer program for 2023. The conference application is available on their website (https://glohea.org) and will be accepted until March 31st, 2023. Each year, admission into our program is competitive, so we highly encourage your students to apply at their earliest convenience. Please direct questions to ghlcjhu@glohea.org.
This international conference is a Johns Hopkins University student and faculty-led program open to students in grades 9-12. Through this conference, students from around the world learn about issues in global health, public health, and medicine through world-class lectures from leaders in these fields, develop connections with like-minded exceptional students, and share their own work and ideas on global health-related topics at the international scale. Featured speakers at the conference have included leading global health researchers, renowned professors, physicians, policy developers, and Nobel Prize winners. In short, the purpose of the program is to reach passionate students of all backgrounds from around the world and develop the next generation of leaders in global health, public health, and medicine.
Virtual conference programming will be held throughout the summer of 2023. The conference consists of a series of multiple virtual events on multiple days throughout June-August 2023. If an admitted student cannot attend parts of the programming live, there will be asynchronous options for students to watch the content they miss. The conference registration fee for admitted students is 99 USD; if the fee places a significant financial burden on a student’s family, financial assistance is available as we do not want the fee to be a barrier for any deserving student.
