Mrs. Randel and her Wellness Class have worked hard putting together the Big Buddy Program and planning activities for the groups. They also plan the 7 Mindset monthly categories and daily questions for students to focus on.
Thank you Mrs. Randel & Wellness students!
Big Buddy
During the 2017-2018 school year, the Akron Middle School Student Council members began a Big Buddy/Little Buddy program through the Akron School. Every Akron Ram, from preschoolers to seniors, partnered up to create lasting memories and wonderful relationships. Students began meeting once a month with their big and little buddies to do different activities designed by the Akron MS Student Council. The idea behind the program was, and continues to be, to create role models, encourage leadership, and establish relationships throughout the building. All students are encouraged to have fun, invest in one another, and become the best Ram they can be.
During the 2018-2019 school year, the Big Buddy Groups changed a little. There were 12-14 students assigned to each classroom. This formed their yearlong Big Buddy Group. Activities were still planned once a month, and the overall goals for the program did not change. The program still promoted role models, leadership, and relationships.
Due to COVID restrictions the Big Buddy Program was put on pause, but it’s now 2023 and IT’S BACK! The Akron High School Wellness Class now creates activities once a quarter for Big Buddy Little Buddy Teams to meet. On October 19, teams met for the first time. Teams are made up of 12-14 students with all teams having one head coach/teacher and one assistant coach. Students were introduced to each other, hung out, and created a feather to be put on a bulletin board. The feathers from all students, preschool through senior, will be collected and hung to create a set of wings. The idea behind all the feathers coming together is to help spread the message that, “When we come together and support each other, we can all spread our wings and fly.” Big Buddy still has the same expectations it did when the program started back in 2017, and that’s to create role models, encourage leadership, and establish relationships throughout the building. Together, staff and students, can become the best Ram they can be.

E-Sports
Akron is kicking off its inaugural year of Esports this year. Esports has been an activity in the state for about 5 years now, and has been sanctioned with CHSAA for around 3. Even though more titles are offered, CHSAA sanctions 4 titles. Those titles are League of Legends, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and Rocket League. Akron participates in the first 3 titles on that list. The kids appear to be having a lot of fun, as there are many laughs throughout the week. The participants are learning many social and teamwork skills while practicing and competing. We compete each week at the same date and time, and those times will be shared below along with the rosters of each team. We are working on getting a live stream set up so people can spectate the matches, but that has yet to be completed. We appreciate all the support that everyone has given us in our first year. Here are the rosters of those who have been involved with Akron Esports so far, but many others have expressed interest in the upcoming semester/season.
