Great things are happening at WCS!
Saturday, 3/25 at 2:00pm WCS 8th grader, Rory Leeman, will compete in the state level of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The competition involves students from across the state of Maine, and the winner will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete nationally. The event is free and open to the public and will take place at the Kanbar Auditorium in the Studzinki Recital Hall on Bowdoin College's campus in Brunswick. GOOD LUCK RORY!!
ODYSSEY OF THE MIND!
Good luck to our Odyssey of the Mind teams who head off to competition this Saturday!! This year K-2, 4th & 5th, and 6th grades are all sending teams! This is the largest group WCS has sent in 5 YEARS and we are so proud of their teamwork and creativity!
WCS AUCTION: SATURDAY, 4/1
The annual WCS Auction is happening NEXT SATURDAY (4/1) This event raises a significant portion of the funds required to send our 8th grade class to Washington, D.C! CLICK HERE for a preview of donated items that you'll have a chance to bid on... the list is growing daily, so check back often!! To see a complete list of items, check out the WCS website and access the list under the link titled, "2023 Auction Items." We are excited to pack the gym with people who want to support our students, bid on great items and who love a good time! There will be childcare and snacks provided! SEE YOU THERE!
WCS RUN CLUB
WCS Run Club is BACK! Students in grades K-5 are invited to participate in this free after-school program that teaches the value of exercise. The club starts after April break and concludes with a student race at the school on June 3rd. CLICK HERE to access the permission slip and to learn more about the program!
5th GRADE TRIP TO GMRI
The 5th grade class had the opportunity to participate in LabVenture at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in Portland this week. Students spend the morning learning about the Gulf of Maine as both an ecosystem and as a fishing industry in our state. They analyze data, identify challenges, consider how to approach and solve problems, and connect with a lobster. The other bonus is seeing how technology can be used to do all of the above, which is a key element in the world they are growing up in now. We are thrilled that we are able to attend LabVenture each year, and it is offered to students for free due to sponsors around the state.
MARCH MAMMAL MADNESS
Here at Woolwich Central School, the third floor is filled with posters supporting fan favorite species from this year's March Mammal Madness bracket, including the Emperor Penguin, Wolverine, Thor's Hero Shrew and the Silky Anteater. Regular updates bring shrieks of despair and glee as species battle for survival in fascinating ways. Sadly, the dedicated fans of the Wildcat, including Mr. Libby, are mourning a first round upset defeat that ruined many a bracket.
While bracket points matter, the motto of MMM is "If you are learning, you are winning!" At the end of the tournament, awards are given for most devoted fans, best fan fiction, most enthusiastic theme song dancing, and other annually inspired categories.
"Inspired by (but in no way affiliated with or representing) the NCAA College Basketball March Madness Championship Tournament, March Mammal Madness is an annual tournament of *simulated* combat competition among animals. Scientific literature is cited to substantiate likely outcomes as a probabilistic function of the two species' attributes within the battle environment. Attributes considered in calculating battle outcome include temperament, weaponry, armor, body mass, running speed, fight style, physiology, and motivation." https://libguides.asu.edu/MarchMammalMadness
RSU1 PRE-K!
WCS KINDERGARTEN!
SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT
This week we honored students' academic achievements and strong character in our second Trimester Assembly. It was fun to get the whole school together to recognize our peers and acknowledge the hard work that's getting done each day!
Remember to send your student in with sneakers when it's their day for P.E. Mr. Hutchings has a few loaners, but it's always helpful for kids to come prepared to run!
This week, 8th grade students met with Guidance Counselors from MHS to pick classes for next year. Spring is officially here!!
This is the place to get all your WCS-branded clothing and accessories.
