Dear East Valley Families,
As we move out of the holiday season, it is amazing how quickly the first part of the school year has gone by. I continue to be impressed with the outstanding learning opportunities I see our teachers provide each and every day in our classrooms, the excitement of our students in the hallways and the classrooms, and the support of our families as we continue to regain the familiarity to a ‘normal’ school routine. After a year and a half of constant changes to those routines, it is taking time for many to become accustomed to the re-establishment of the expectations of a more structured environment.
With that in mind, our continued work together, as a school system and as a community, to establish clear routines, consistent expectations, and systems of support to address student needs, will ensure high levels of learning for ALL of our students. As we work together to create consistency between the school and home, this consistency greatly increases the likelihood of success, not only academically, but also behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. If you are unsure of what you can do to support your child, I encourage you to contact the school for more information.
Thank you for the trust you place in our district and all of your hard work in supporting your student(s). I look forward to seeing you out in our schools and community, and having the chance to talk in person.
Sincerely,
Russ Hill, Superintendent of East Valley Schools

Therapy Dog Reporting for Duty
Meet Jordan! Jordan is a nine month old chocolate Labrador Retriever who is working as a "therapy-dog-in-training" at East Valley Elementary with her handler, Mr. Kevin Taylor (EVE PE teacher).
Jordan is working towards becoming a fully trained therapy dog. She has taken a "leadership" class through ACME Dog Training and will soon be taking the S.T.A.R. test (Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsibility). After her S.T.A.R. test, she moves on to complete the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. In the spring she will be enrolled in a therapy training class. In total, once all of Jordan's classes are finished, she will have completed around 20 hrs of class/training. Mr. Taylor states, "throughout this training process she has shown how obedient and receptive she is to everything being taught to her. The best practical training is her in-school experiences."
Jordan has been welcomed with open arms at EVE. Staff and students enjoy having Jordan be part of their school. Earlier this month, as students were arriving in the morning and Jordan was greeting the students coming into the building, one student came up to Mr. Taylor and told him, "I really didn't feel like coming to school today, but I knew I would get to see Jordan."

Fall into Warmth
This fall, East Valley Central counselors organized a "Fall into Warmth" event to benefit our EV community. Over the course of several weeks, they collected gently used/new donated clothing items and shoes. On the day of the event, EV families were able to "shop" for free! The goal was to make sure all members of our community have clothing to help them stay warm this winter.
While volunteers didn't weigh the donated items to get a total weight, they did keep track of some numbers:
Donors: 25 EVC staff members, our 4 other schools, and over 20 community members donated to the clothing drive.
Donated Items: At the event there were over 800 items hanging on racks (coats, shirts, sweaters, dresses and more), 12 tables were filled with folded clothes, and over 50 pairs of shoes were donated.
Shoppers: Once open for "shopping" there was a continuous flow of shoppers all day. Total attendance was estimated to be around 150.
Thank you to everyone who donated items and to all the volunteers who helped organize, set-up, and clean-up after the event. Thank you Andera Zagelow, Priscilla Ponce-Venegas, Joann and Marvin Estes Torres, Raylene Lacaman, Jennifer Mendoza-Mata, Olga Zuniga, Hugo Camarillo, Eric Hevland, Amanda Barnett, Ellie Rivera, Andria Keirn, Ashley Parrish, Becky MacEwen, Brooks Cooper, and Ross Elves. Student volunteers: Estevan Zuniga, Hayley Solorzano, Natallie Byrd, and Ms. Funk and her Ignite students.

Holiday Meal Train
Homelessness and hunger are current economic and social hardships reaching all communities across the United States, especially as the COVID-19 crisis continues to affect many families. The East Valley School District (EVSD) currently has over 100 families qualifying as homeless under the Federal McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act guidelines. Moxee Booster Club joined forces with EVSD’s Special Programs in efforts to support our EV families needing assistance throughout the winter months.
From early November to mid-December, organizers collected donations to help fill Holiday Meal Boxes which were then delivered to EV families for Thanksgiving and again during winter break. Each $25 donation funded a Holiday Meal box that included an 8-10lb. turkey, potatoes, gravy, rolls, margarine, canned vegetables, and a pie to feed a family of 4-6. Overall, the Moxee Booster Club and EVSD's Special Programs was able to organize over 200 Holiday Meal Box deliveries.
Thank you to all those who donated to the Holiday Meal Train efforts! It takes a village and together we will make a difference!
