This Week at GLOBE
News & Notes | February 2, 2022
From the Executive Director
Dear GLOBE community,
I'd like to use this space to highlight some key takeaways from Monday evening's board meeting.
In addition to encouraging reports from the Academic and Communications Committees, we had a robust discussion about the state of the Lower Campus HVAC system. Here's the latest:
- We are fully committed to making the permanent fix to our HVAC. As I mentioned last week, we sought and received objective recommendations from the engineering experts at Barrett, Woodyard & Associates. We are now awaiting bids from three contractors, based on those recommendations.
- All three contractors are aware that the work needs to start and end during the summer break. That said, we are aware that we must identify potential swing spaces should the need arise. Our facilities committee will be pursuing this.
- We have been assured by outside engineers and remediation experts that it is safe to be in our building. Of course, we want to be sure we have all the information to ensure it stays that way. With that in mind, we are working with contracted experts to identify what kind of air quality testing should be conducted and at what cadence.
- For the short term — now until the end of the academic year — we are working closely with Hibernia Environmental on solutions to keep our environment healthy for students and staff. This is a complex issue that will most likely involve the use of industrial-grade dehumidifiers.
- Two classrooms remain without central heat, but they do have space heaters. These space heaters had been tripping circuits — our building was built before anyone thought an individual classroom would have its own refrigerator, microwave, multiple lamps, and now space heaters — but we brought in an electrical company that was able to solve for this. We realize issues like this may arise again in the next few months; we are doing contingency planning, in the event that classrooms need to be vacated.
Now, a couple of non-HVAC related updates for you:
- The board approved the calendar for the 2022–2023 school year. Please check it out here.
- Monday’s meeting also marked a transition of board leadership: Ryan Hudak, who has served on the board of directors since 2017 and chaired the board since 2020, transitioned to an ex-officio role; Drew Reynolds, the academic committee chair, was elected the new board chair. (You’ll hear more from him soon!) We’re deeply grateful to Ryan and Drew for their extraordinary service and leadership.
Sincerely,
Christi Elliott-Earby

Language exchange with high school students in Valdosta, Ga.
GLOBE 3rd grade teacher, Sra. Paulsen, collaborated with Sra. Tilt of Lowndes County High School in Valdosta, Ga., to do a language exchange with students.
Sra. Paulsen's third grade students had a publishing party where they read their narrative writing to high school students in Language IV-AP at Lowndes County High School. The high schoolers were kind, patient, and respectful, asking GLOBE students thoughtful questions about their writing and the writing process such as, "¿Cuál fue tu parte favorito? (What was your favorite part?)" and "¿Cuánto tiempo te demoró en escribir la historia? (How long did it take you to write your story?").
In exchange, students from Lowndes County High School modeled a read aloud for GLOBE students using narrative books, Si le das un pastelito a un gato, by Laura Joffe, and ¿Qué puedes hacer con una paleta? by Carmen Tafolla.
GLOBE Academy students asked high schoolers, "¿Por qué te gusta el libro? (Why do you like the book?) and "¿Quién es tu personaje favorito? (Who is your favorite character?).
It was such a wonderful exchange between classes and students.

Rising 6th grade Connections selection
All 5th grade students who are returning to GLOBE are required to select their middle school Connections class. A form was recently sent home with students, however, you can also use this online form. The class choices are Art, Band, Orchestra, or Chorus. Forms must be submitted by February 11. Thank you.
Important AM carpool updates
- Carpool line opens at 7:30am. Unless your student is signed up for ECP, they may not be left on campus until that time. We have a number of parents who are dropping off students, unsupervised, in the dark, prior to the start of carpool. This is a major safety concern, and needs to cease.
- Morning carpool is being significantly delayed by parents who continue to turn left out of the morning carpool line, or who turn right as requested only to immediately block traffic on Briarcliff Road turning left into the park. Since classes resumed after winter break, carpool is ending 5-10 minutes late (after 8:00am), and students are missing important instructional time.
- When exiting the carpool line in the morning, please turn RIGHT onto Briarcliff Road. Out of respect for the cars still in line, the traffic on Briarcliff, and the neighborhood, please refrain from turning around in the park and instead proceed on Briarcliff Road until you have reached a cross street.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

2022 GLOBE Annual Auction
We are now accepting donations for the The GLOBE Academy's PTCC Annual Spring Auction. This year's auction will be a two-part event beginning with a silent auction (April 29), open and free for all through mobile bidding, and culminating with an in-person indoor/outdoor event (April 30) at Wild Heaven Brewery in Avondale Estates. The auction benefits all PTCC activities throughout the year including teacher appreciation, classroom resources, cultural events, International Fest, campus updates, Science Night and more. In order to make this possible, we need donations! Know of someone with a wonderful vacation home? Have a favorite boutique or fitness studio in the area? No donation is too big or small.
We also need volunteers to make the auction a success. Email auction@theglobeacademy.net to volunteer to serve on the auction committee.
Extended Care Program (ECP)
We have a limited number of aftercare spaces available. Email cclines@theglobeacademy.net for details.
COVID Corner
Weekly COVID-19 testing
Viral Solutions will be back on campus again on Thursday, February 3 to provide all GLOBE students and staff with access to free rapid antigen testing. We have been so impressed with the participation in our weekly testing clinics and commend the dedication of our GLOBE community in keeping one another safe. The positivity rates of each testing clinic can be found on tab 2 of the Data Dashboard. Results will be updated the day after each testing clinic occurs. Last week, we tested 633 individuals and identified 3 positive cases.
Viral Solutions has confirmed that weekly testing will occur at GLOBE each Thursday in February. The upcoming COVID-19 testing schedule is as follows: Thursday, February 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th. As a reminder, you only have to fill out the testing consent form one time per semester. Once your student is signed up, they will be called for testing each week. If you would like to enroll your student in testing for the semester, you can fill out the consent form here. If you have questions about the testing process or how to receive your student's results, please read the FAQ flyer.
Vaccination Clinic
Our next clinic will be at Upper Campus on February 19.
Vaccination survey
We would like to determine how many of our students are fully vaccinated. This will allow us to determine which students may not have to quarantine if they are exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, understanding the vaccination coverage in our community will help us to make informed decisions about sporting events and meal time locations. To learn more and/or to notify us, click here.
Our mandatory mask mandate, quarantine and isolation policies, and other prevention guidelines are outlined in the updated COVID-19 Health and Safety Playbook (version 2).
