School Reopening: Social Emotional Learning
Recognizing the challenges that our families and staff are facing in the distance learning environment, LASD administrators are focused on the social and emotional well-being of our entire school community. Over the summer, two teams of educators and school psychologists worked to create a comprehensive set of training modules for our teachers to build proactive and reactive skills and strategies for our classroom communities. Our teachers participated in this professional development in August.
The social-emotional professional development included trauma-informed practices, creating a classroom environment that supports all students, and building emotional resilience. Teachers learned about the Five Core Competencies of Social Emotional Learning to incorporate these practices consistently in their classrooms for all students. Finally, teachers learned about Responsive Classroom, a tool to bring all of these components together.
The next step is creating a district-wide curriculum to implement these practices formally across all sites. Our schools are also developing student crisis intervention plans. Our principals continue to work with staff in a school-wide commitment to the social-emotional well-being of all members of our school communities: teachers, staff, students and families.

Learning Continuity and Attendance Plan
The Board held a public hearing on the Learning Continuity and Attendance Plan for LASD. The plan set forth LASD's actions in Spring 2020 in the distance learning environment, as well as goals and plans for the current school year regarding stakeholder engagement, distance learning, student assessments to prevent learning loss, social-emotional well-being, school nutrition services and more.
For more information, please check out item H.2. on our agenda online, including the draft LCAP plan.
School Reopening Update: Waiver
Mr. Baier discussed the two different scenarios that will guide the reopening of our schools. The first is the recently approved LASD Waiver, which allows our schools to initially bring targeted students who require significant academic support in distance learning to our campuses for in-person instruction, followed by our youngest students. The first students to return will include our students enrolled in Special Day Class and students requiring additional academic support in a distance learning environment, and then students in grades TK-3 will return in phases as well. Our general student population in 4th-8th grade are not currently included under the waiver.
Families of TK-3rd Grade students enrolled in the Blended Learning program are currently expected to return to campus in their A/B Groups on Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday according to the schedule below. The other three days of the week, students will be learning from home through asynchronous, independent projects and assignments. These three distance learning days will be a lot like your child's current Wednesday. For more information on our Blended Learning program and example schedules, please visit our Reopening Webpage.
Please take note of the deadlines, under both this scenario and the one below, to change your child's academic program to either Blended Learning (in-person) or Virtual School. Please notify your school principal if you would like to change your child's program.
For more information, check out item H.5. on our agenda online.
Update: Countywide School Reopening in Tier "Red"
Under the State of California's new color-coded reopening plan, if Santa Clara County remains in the "Red" Tier for 14 consecutive days, our schools should be able to reopen to all grade levels, TK-8. If the County allows for a reopening under the state's Tiered system, LASD plans to reopen based on the guidelines and plans outlined in its Reopening and Instructional plans. LASD will bring students back to campus in a phased, measured reopening to ensure the health and safety of our students, staff and families.
Please note that we will update our community if we are able to reopen under this scenario as soon as we are notified. In the case we reopen under the State's tiered system, below is our planned phased reopening schedule, which is subject to change based on any state and local public health requirements.
Again, please take note of the deadlines, under both scenarios, to change your child's academic program to either Blended Learning (in-person) or Virtual School. Please notify your school principal if you would like to change your child's program.
For more information, please check out item H.5. on our agenda online.
