Greetings to all Nike Families,
January 4, 2021
Greetings to all Nike Families;
I would like to wish a very Happy New Year to our Nike Family! I trust you had a wonderful winter break with family and friends. As we ring in the New Year it is an exciting time to reflect on our accomplishments and review goals for what we have left to do in this school year. Can you believe that we are halfway through this school year? Where did the time go? The work that is required of the school, the teachers, the students and their families has increased significantly during these past few years.
There is no school on Monday, January 17th in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. In today’s polarized society, I draw your attention to one of Dr. King’s most famous quotes: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." It’s too easy to point to those that disagree with us and say they are wrong, it’s much more difficult to dialogue with them and come to some sort of understanding of one another. Dr. King invites us to look to the light, to look to love, when dealing with those with whom we disagree.
Finally, on behalf of Nike’s faculty and staff, thank you for your continued support of our students and the work we do for them. It is truly the community, parents, and staff partnering and working together that allows us to maintain the successes we have so long enjoyed here at Nike! As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact a teacher or me directly. We are here to work together to provide the best possible education for your student!
I wanted to share the Nike Scout’s Daily Pledge. Students recite this every morning.
Today I will be a good role model and team player.
I will be a clever problem solver who is kind, open and honest.
I will be in control of myself and keep trying when things get tough.
I AM a Nike Scout.
I hope that each and every family has a wonderful holiday season shared with family and friends.

8 PILLARS OF SUCCESS: January= RESPONSIBILITY
December's Pillar word was critical thinking. January's pillar word is responsibility.
Counselor's Corner
In January we will begin a student-lead learning project that will give students an opportunity to make a positive impact on their community. They will learn about respecting other's choices and collaboration as well as teamwork. Students will select 2 community projects and 'vote' with coins that will be collected in the classrooms. This activity will allow students in all grade levels to learn about being a contributing member of a community. One of these projects will involve adding a Little Free Pantry to the Nike campus. Little Free Pantries (LFP) are free standing pantries that are the size of a dresser. They encourage people to take what they need and leave what they can. Due to the enormous support at our Thanksgiving food drive, we have plenty of extra canned goods to stock the pantry. The money raised will be used to purchase the lumber, hinges, posts and paint. If any community members are interested in helping to build the pantry please email aholt@mvr3.k12.mo.us or call the office. While I am a dedicated school counselor, my carpentry skills are somewhat lacking and any assistance is greatly appreciated. After the "Coins for Our Community" project, the counseling lessons will focus on exploring careers and the student's role in his or her own education.
From Nurse Jamie
I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays with their families! Because these family-oriented holidays tend to produce and increase in the spread of covid-19 and other illness, please be mindful of your child's health and monitor for symptoms before sending your child to school each day. If your child experiences symptoms of covid-19, or cold/flu symptoms, please keep them home and contact the school. We want to minimize the spread of disease at school and keep our kids safe and healthy!
MUSIC
Art
Nike Artists have been very busy preparing for our second art exhibit of the year. Student work will be in the Board Room at MVR-III Central Office during the month of January.
We will begin our clay projects soon! Pre-K and Kindergarten will learn how to make a pinch pot and First Grade will turn their pinch pots into cups. It’s going to be a great time in the art room!
Library
In January, fourth graders will start their research/writing unit. We will discuss plagiarism and note-taking. The topic for our project will be a US state. Each student will then create a travel brochure for their state highlighting sites to visit in the state. Third grade will be doing lessons on Author's Purpose and other topics.
Many of the topics we use in third and fourth grade library lessons are accessed through Clever and students can access these at home. Some of these would be great time fillers when stuck inside due to cold and snow! Some require passwords. The username and password for Bookflix and TrueFlix are the same - username - nmvr and password is trueflix.
K-2 students will continue to read the Show Me Picture books. We will also continue to discuss nonfiction books and introduce biography, which is a book about a person. Second grade will also start to work on using the dictionary and special nonfiction text features such as table of contents.
Physical Education
PTO Spotlight
Happy New Year. PTO had an amazing Snowball with Santa event in December. Thank you to all who attended and donated. We couldn't put on events and pour into the school and our students without parent participation.
Looking at the events ahead...mark your calendar for Jan 21st at 6pm, PTO is hosting another Family Movie night. We will provide free popcorn and have snacks and drinks for purchase. Movie is still to be decided.
We are excited to have a new event this year which is happening in Feb. Not quite sure of the name of it but we're thinking Princess Ball and Boy Bash event! Details to follow.
Also our Rummage Sale is on the calendar for April 23rd.
