Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
This week was Kindness Week at CHS, and students celebrated by leaving kind notes for one another and participating in an activity for the theme of each day. I am so proud of our students “leaning in” to these opportunities. Our students also completed a successful coin drive and are looking forward to partnering with “Make a Wish” to continue to serve and support others in our community.
As we continue the school year, we remain committed to fostering academic excellence for all students. Beginning in trimester 2, we will have a school wide initiative of being Ready to Learn. This means:
On time
Prepared
Phones away
Our goal is for all students to come to every class period on time and be prepared to learn. In addition, personal electronic devices like smartphones are a part of daily lives and can be a distraction to students in class. Recent studies show that when cellphones are away during class, students' mental health, academic achievement, and classroom culture significantly improve.
To be Ready to Learn, here are the agreements we will expect of our students and families:
Phones are to be away during class time, including in classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria, and common spaces.
Students may use their device before/after school, during passing time, and lunch; or if a teacher explicitly asks students to pull out their phones for a specific task.
Families can support your student by recognizing you may not receive an instant response to a message. Students can still receive and respond to your messages during passing time or at lunch.
If you have an emergency, please call the main office, and we will prioritize communication with your student.
We recognize that a few students will have specific requirements as a part of a specific personal health plan (i.e. diabetic regulation apps). Those students can work with their counselors or case managers for specific support.
CHS administrators and staff are committed to this goal, and we appreciate your partnership. We will review our Ready to Learn plan in every class at the beginning of trimester 2. If you are interested in reading more about the research and best practices for cell phones, here is some information about academic performance and mental health. Thank you for your support.
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan
