Motivating and Preparing All Students to Reach their Greatest Potential
Message from TAG Coordinator
This Fall I've been really busy, and some of the highlights for me include: checking in with our High School TAG students, updating student TAG plans with families, and organizing the Fall Noetic Math Contest for students in grades 3-8. I also attended trainings with the Oregon Association of TAG and the National Association of Gifted Children. I’m looking forward to continuing to build our TAG program and support our students, parents, and staff. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Updating TAG Plans Annually
High School students and parents can request a TAG meeting at any time. I'm checking in with students each Fall through a "TAG Student Needs Survey" and meeting with students by request. Next year, I will begin working with students on strength based goal-setting. Students will write their own annual goals, which will be shared with parents and teachers.
What does Giftedness look like?
Historically, the students that are most likely to be identified as gifted excel in school, are well-behaved, independent, and are seeking a challenge. In reality, this profile fits only 7-10% of those that are actually gifted. By learning more about this group of students, we can better understand, identify, and support our TAG learners. Siuslaw staff K-12 will receive professional development this December and January, focusing on the diversity of the gifted population.
Take a closer look at the TAG profiles here as described by George Betts and Maureen Neihart (2010).

NEW Siuslaw WeCC After School Program
Beginning on December 4th, Siuslaw Elementary and Middle Schools will provide an after school program that offers students enrichment activities, academic support, and a meal after school. Registration for this program opened Friday, November 17th, and forms are available at the front offices, on Parent Square, and attached here. It is first come, first served and will fill up quickly. All registration forms should be turned into your front office. There is no cost for students to attend. The program is Monday-Thursday from 3:00-5:30 with options to enroll in some or all of the program. Amanda Sarles and Jadzia Berry are co-site coordinators and questions can be directed their way. asarles@siuslaw.k12.or.us , jsimpsonberry@siuslaw.k12.or.us
Did you know SHS has an ESports Team?
Esports is now backed by the Oregon School Activities Association. Our high school team has finished up the exhibition season and the official ranked season starts in the middle of January. They also have some other games like Overwatch available that are not part of the official OSAA season. Check out their website here: https://siuslawesports.com/. See Mr. Looney for more information.
SHS plans for CodeORCreate Event
This year's High School CodeORCreate event will take place the weekend of December 8-10. CodeORCreate is a coding/game development 48-hour competition that Siuslaw has participated in for the past 3 years and placed 1st in at least one category each year. Check out the codeORcreate website here. There is another similar event called "Marketing Jam" in January that focuses on Marketing/Web Design. See Mr. Looney for more information.

Get involved with the Kiwanis Builders Club
SHS Key Club serves our Florence Community
Key Club members around the world are learning how to lead and stand for what's right through service and volunteerism. In partnership with their local Kiwanis Club, high school students are making a positive impact as they serve others in their schools and communities. Key Club meets monthly on Tuesdays with Mrs. Holden.
SES Provides Band and Choir
Students in grades 4-5 can participate in after school band and choir. They each meet once a week with music teacher, Mrs. Sarles. She can be contacted at asarles@siuslaw.k12.or.us for more information.
National Noetic Math Contest
The NLMC is one of the largest math contests in the United States for elementary and middle school students. Every year, more than 30,000 students across the country participate in the contest to compete against each other. We had 108 students in grades 3-8 participate in our Fall contest, and we will also participate in the Spring contest in April.
SHS Tabletop Games
D-20 is an after school club that provides a space for high school students to play various "tabletop" games as well as engage with others who share a passion for imagination, strategy, and friendly competition. D20 is every Wednesday from 3:30-5 pm in the SHS Library. Students have been playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: the Gathering, and Settlers of Catan. Staff volunteers are Melanie Goeddel, Andreus Dunn, and Charlie Melville. Students who are interested can also go to tinyurl.com/D20SHS to fill out an application to join!
Family Bilingual Literacy Nights
Join the Family Bilingual Nights to learn English, work on writing and communication skills, and network with other families. Meetings are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:45-6:30, and a meal will be provided. Email kkeppol@siuslaw.k12.or.us for more information.

Circle of Friends at SHS
GSA at Siuslaw High School
The GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance, formerly Gay Straight Alliance) Club at SHS is a student-led organization that provides a supportive and inclusive space for individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The club aims to promote understanding, acceptance, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals within the school community. The GSA works to foster a safe-space for all individuals, raise funds for important causes, educate others, and provide fun community building activities. This club meets Mondays at lunch and Melanie Goeddel is the advisor.
4-H Coming Soon - Volunteers needed
Join the SMS Interact Jr. Club
This club is led by Rotarians, Stephanie Restrepo and Bob Teter. They meet before school from 7:45-8:15 on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. They plan activities to give back to the community, be part of a bigger cause, and gain leadership skills. This is a great way to meet new friends. The club is open to any students that would like to join.
SHS Interact Club develops leadership skills
Interact Clubs bring together young people ages 12 to 18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of service above self. Interact clubs organize at least two projects every year. One that helps their school or community, and one that promotes international understanding. Bob Teter and Lori Gates are the advisors.
