Sierra School Scoop
March 13 - March 17, 2023
Principal's Message...
Hello Sierra Families,
Thank you for your continued flexibility as we navigate the crazy weather these past few weeks. Because school did have to close for several days, we now are utilizing our built-in make up days at the end of the school year. This means, the LAST DAY of school will be Thursday, June 1st. Our typical year-end activities for students will shift a few days, so please do make sure that your child attends school until the very last day.
With a continued focus on the importance of school attendance, we will be incorporating some fun things into our Mondays moving forward, including spirit days, our Sparky School Store, and opportunities to earn class prizes for attendance. While we know students get sick, and things come up, we want to encourage students to be at school every day, when possible. Thank you for your continued support with this.

Hello Dragons!
As we move along with the CYRM (California Young Reader Medal), most classes were able to move onto book #4. This week's book “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates” is written and illustrated by Ryan T. Higgins and the clue is a goldfish. This delightful story is about a T. Rex whose name is Penelope. She is starting school but finds out when she gets there that she is attending school with delicious children! Penelope struggles not eating her classmates and has to spit them out when she does. Her classmates are afraid of being eaten, they don’t play with her and she feels lonely at school. Walter the goldfish (class pet), bites Penelope when she sticks her finger in his fishbowl to say hi. This quickly teaches Penelope that you can make friends with others if you don't eat them. Next week we read book number 5 and then we will vote for our favorite. AR prizes are being put together and will go out soon. Remember, good things happen when you read!

Miss Alissa's Counseling Corner!
Miss Alissa’s Counseling Corner - Building Responsible People
Have you ever wished that your child was more responsible? Maybe you find yourself hoping that they will do their chores without being asked 10 times. Or remember to bring their jacket home from school before it gets tossed in the black hole we call the Lost and Found. Being responsible is a broad term that typically includes traits like:
-Being dependable
-Being accountable for your behavior
-Putting forth your best effort
-Fulfilling your commitments
-Keeping your word
-Contributing to one’s family, community, and society.
Fun fact- Self-esteem and responsibility often go hand in hand. Children who have higher self-esteem tend to be more responsible too. If you want to instill a solid sense of responsibility in a kiddo, the best way to do so is to focus first on building up their self-esteem.There are two components of increasing self-esteem:
Feeling loveable-knowing they are loved for who they are instills self worth and that they are important.
Feeling capable-having a sense of power, control, and competency.
With these two factors, kids are more likely to demonstrate responsibility because they feel confident about their ability to be successful. When they are successful, their self-esteem and self worth blossom.
Here is a tried and true way to build self-esteem, and by proxy, responsibility in a child. Give them age appropriate chores to do! First, teach them step by step in simple terms. Model how you do it and have them copy you. Once they have completed the task give appropriate praise and recognition. This might sound like, “ Thank you for setting the table. You put everything in the right spot and that helped a lot!” See below for age appropriate chores.

Hammer Headlines
What a crazy two weeks it has been. Snow days and icy roads. I am grateful for the five feet of snow on my front porch. I will be calling parents of students who repeatedly do not follow direction or are distributive in class. PE will be on the black top and music room this week.
Primary students will be doing boot camp and jump rope activities. Students will be completing different levels of Mr. Snake (the jump rope) and do individual jumping to gain speed. We will continue to do warm ups and stretch head to toe.
Third to fifth grade students will be doing boot camp activities, 8 to 10 minutes of jogging / running, and basketball skills. They will also be playing round the world basketball style. The cool down activity will be either parachute or basketball. Students will also do relays, warm-ups and stretch head to toe.
Next week fifth grade students will start their California Physical Fitness Testing. They will need correct foot wear and also water bottles. The week of March 14 they will be completing the mile run and flexibility test. On the week of March 21 they will be completing the sit and reach, push up, and curl up tests. Make ups will be the week on March 28.
