A Note From the Principal
As we embark on these last few weeks of our first year together, I am so very grateful for all we have experienced here at SIS. When the school year first begins, we see the many days, weeks, and months ahead as opportunities for learning and growing both individually and together. Gradually, and yet in the blink of an eye, the school year comes to a close and we all find ourselves wondering where the time went! It's crazy how life works like that.
We've been through and accomplished a lot this school year. Looking back we've:
- navigated through on-going pandemic concerns and adjustments
- introduced, learned, and utilized New Perspectives math materials to teach students mathematical concepts at their developmentally appropriate level
- took our 4th and 5th graders on a field trip to Dan & Debbie's for the first time in TWO YEARS!
- enjoyed an afternoon of trivia fun for all students while teachers engaged in PD
- purchased a *soon to be installed* volleyball net and new scooters for recess play using money from an anonymous donation
- shared student progress during fall and spring conferences
- 4th graders completed the NAEP test
- made the most of our snow with sledding days!
- celebrating student writing with "Fancy Fridays", gallery walks, and grade-level sharing
- got festive before winter break and enjoyed some extra special days before break decorating our SIS tree, sipped on hot cocoa and listened to a seasonal story from Mrs. Holtz, donned our ugly Christmas sweaters, and watched a movie
- purchased new science texts to support our science and literacy integration work
- started up 5th grade band again!
- navigated the shifting of classes for 4th graders
- previewed our spring musical, "My Son Pinocchio."
- enjoyed our SIS IN-formance by 4th & 5th grade students and Mrs. Frerichs
- successfully completed our ISASP testing online
- raised more than $1400 for our Solon Fire Dept with the support of our Iowa Realtor's Foundation Project Jack grant
- participated in our Spartan Dash PTO fundraiser
Even though we've already engaged in so much, we plan to make the most of our last 19 days with students! If I don't say it enough, thank you for your support. Thank you for your involvement in our school. Thank you for all that YOU do from home to support us here at school! It truly is a team effort!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Holtz
Track and Field Day Info
A Note from Mr. Williams
Dear Parents,
The Solon Physical Education Department is sponsoring our annual track and field day for SIS students in grades 4-5. The event will be held at Spartan Stadium on Wednesday, May 18 from 11:30-3:00. Friends and families are invited to attend. Sportsmanship, effort, and self-esteem are emphasized. The event promotes physical, social, and cognitive development of children.
In the event of threatening weather, officials will determine if it is necessary to postpone the event. The rain date will be Monday, May 23.
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Tennis shoes and athletic wear are a must. Students are also being asked to wear a t-shirt that corresponds to the color of their essential group. (Orange, Black, Gray, or White)
We are in need of parent volunteers for various field events and other jobs throughout the event. We cannot pull off an event like this without volunteers. Please sign up below using the sign up genius if you can help.

Project Jack!
Now, each year, classrooms around the state Iowa are afforded the opportunity to apply for a Project Jack grant from the Iowa Realtors Association. These grant money is to be used to spread kindness and positivity to others, just like Jack enjoyed doing. This year all of our 4th grade classes were awarded the $250 grant, for a total of $1250 to use towards our selected grant.
Our 4th graders made fleece tie blankets and sold them for the $20 each to make even more money for the new fire house.
Students worked hard to tie the blankets and had even more fun knowing that they were helping their hometown of Solon! Thanks to the support of our families and communities, students sold all 60 of the blankets they made and raised $1450 for our Solon Fire Department! Be watching for an article in the Solon Economist about our presentation to the Solon Fire Department!! It was so fun to see the smiles on students' faces when they presented this money to the fire department!
Special thanks to Ms. Brimeyer, Ms. McAtee, Mrs. Meyers, and Mrs. Walden for their hard work in making this project come alive!!
Jr Optimist Club Coming to SIS!
First Club Meeting
The Jr. Optimist Club is a youth club designed to help foster leadership and service in students from a young age.
The club will meet during lunch and work with both Ms. McAtee and Mr. John McFarland to seek ways to lead and serve our Solon area.
If your child is interested in joining the Jr. Optimist Club, we will have an initial meeting during lunch at May 16. Please encourage your child to attend and learn more. There is no commitment to the club to attend this initial meeting. This meeting is open to current 4th grade students.
We look forward to partnering with the Optimist Club to help our students with both leadership and service mindsets.
