A Note from our Principal, Mrs. Walk
Hello Trebein Parents,
I've been reading a book called Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline: The 7 Basic Skills for Turning Conflict Into Cooperation by Becky A. Bailey, Ph.D. This book is a way for parents to focus on self-control and confidence-building, thus leading to happier, healthier families. This book is about parents teaching their children how to behave, not about controlling their children's behavior. (To discipline and to teach are the same acts.)
Dr. Bailey focuses on Seven Powers for Self-Control to guide parents. These powers are perceptual skills that enable parents to become proactive rather than reactive in conflict moments.
- The Power of Perception: No one can make you angry without your permission.
- The Power of Attention: What you focus on, you get more of.
- The Power of Free Will: The only person who can make a change is yourself.
- The Power of Unity: Focus on connecting instead of trying to be special.
- The Power of Love: See the best in one another.
- The Power of Acceptance: This moment as it is.
- The Power of Intention: Conflict is an opportunity to teach.
From these Seven Powers for Self-Control emerge the Seven Basic Discipline Skills. These are the only skills parents need to constructively respond to any difficult moment. Using these two concepts together will create a home that values the Seven Values for Living.
- Composure: Living the values you want your child to develop. This teaches integrity.
- Encouragement: Honoring children so they will honor you. This teaches interdependence.
- Assertiveness: Saying no and being heard. This teaches respect.
- Choices: Building self-esteem and willpower. This teaches commitment.
- Positive Intent: Turning resistance into cooperation. This teaches cooperation.
- Empathy: Handling the fussing and the fits. This teaches compassion.
- Consequences: Helping children learn from their mistakes. This teaches responsibility.
Of course, Dr. Bailey goes into great detail on strategies for parents and what each of these concepts really mean and look like. I simply wanted to give you a synopsis in case you are looking for a good parenting book to read.
Thank you for sharing your children with us. We absolutely adore them!

Trebein's November SHINE Award
This month's SHINE award winner for Trebein is Olivia Wagstrom. Olivia is a 4th grade student in Whitney Long's room. Olivia was nominated because she continuously gives her time to help others when she sees they are in need. Whether it is helping with math, directions for an assignment, or being someone students can partner with, she always makes herself available. Olivia shows patience and provides a calm, safe environment when helping classmates.
5th Grade DARE Graduation
The DARE program is taught by Officer Wisecup from the Beavercreek Police Department. Each year, Officer Wisecup chooses student(s) to receive the DARE Character Award. This award is based on outstanding behavior, not only during DARE, but also in the classroom.
Congratulations to for Brooklyn W. and Jillian S. for winning the Charcater Award!
We are so proud of our 5th Grade students for completing the DARE program!
