What Does Hispanic Heritage Month Mean to You?
Our school counselor was featured on PGCPS's website to Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 Saber es poder: Celebrating Latino Educators.
Meet Jose Conde, a Professional School Counselor at CMIT Academy North High School with 18 years with PGCPS!
Q. What is your heritage and what country (or countries) is your family from?
A. El Salvador
Q. What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you personally, and why is it important to celebrate it in the PGCPS community?
A. Hispanic Heritage Month is the acknowledgement of the presence of an important segment of the American population. It is an effort to counteract marginalization. It is an antiracist effort to strike at the heart of racism, ethnocentrism, xenophobia, and stereotyping of people groups. It is broadening America's view of what being Hispanic actually means: it's a beautiful blend of colors, cultures, and customs that provides a majestic mosaic of myriad political, geographical, and ancestral backgrounds. Hispanic Heritage Month emphasizes the complexities of an ethnic identity that has been and continues to be influenced by constant clashes between old world and new world forces. Lastly, Hispanic Heritage Month ensures our young people know who they are and empowers them to claim and take ownership of their identity.
Q. How has your cultural background and heritage shaped your perspective as a leader in education?
A. There is a lack of knowledge students have of different groups of people in the school system. I have made sure that in my role as an English teacher and my role as a professional school counselor to challenge the stereotypes our staff and students have of Hispanics in the U.S.
Furthermore, my hope is that my hard work and dedication in education encourages my students to view themselves as future professionals and leaders in the field of education and in any other profession.
Q. What advice do you have for those interested in pursuing a career in education, especially those from Latino backgrounds?
A. Do not let anyone define who you are based on your national, ethnic, racial, or linguistic background. Make no apologies for being in America. You belong here and you are an important part of this country. Take up the challenge to develop yourself to your fullest potential through education, hard work, and dedication. Don't strive to prove to people your importance; strive to live out the importance with which you were already born. You were made for something great; show your greatness in everything you do.
Q. Can you recommend a book, movie, podcast or other resource that students, parents and educators can explore to learn more about Hispanic heritage and its significance in our society?
Hispanic heritage is intricately woven in the American tapestry. It would be harder to try to avoid hearing about an influential Hispanic American than it is to actually find important Hispanic American historical and contemporary figures in America.
I would advise reading the autobiographies of people like Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Listen to Latin-American music like Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. Research the contributions of Latin-American art and culture on music and visual arts like Frida Kahlo, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Gloria Estefan. Research the many racial backgrounds of Hispanics. Research the many American political figures like Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez.
CMIT North HS Safety Upgrades
Dear CMIT North HS Families,
We hope this message finds you well. At CMIT North HS, the safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. We want to provide you with more clarification on the new safety measures that we are taking at CMIT North HS this school year.
Metal Detectors will be set up at the entrances of the building of all PGCPS high schools, including CMIT North HS. As students enter the building in the morning, they will go through the metal detectors, only taking out metal items that are a Chromebook or larger. If the detector is triggered, the student will have to step aside, and their items will be searched. If any unapproved items are found, the appropriate consequences will be applied. We will also be having random classroom searches when necessary using the metal detectors.
The metal detectors will also be at our front door as a guest enters the building. Any metal items larger than a Chromebook must not be brought into the building. If the metal detector is triggered as a guest enters the building, we will ask them to return any items to their car and re-enter through the metal detector until it no longer goes off.
We are using Open Gate Metal Detectors. Here is a video that shows the process students will go through in the mornings with the metal detectors. OPENGATE Weapon Detection System Informational Video Although this video is for a different school district, the methods will be the same.
There has been an increase in instances in the district of drug abuse, overdose, and vaping. In order to ensure our students’ safety, we have installed advanced sensors in our bathrooms that are designed to detect any smoke, vape particles in the air, sprays (such as hairspray or perfume), and aggressive behavior.
Please rest assured that the data collected by these sensors will be used solely for safety and security purposes. The sensors are not recording and are not cameras.
Any student in the bathroom during the time of the alert will be searched. Searches of students may include emptying of pockets, removal of outwear, and searches of personal items, i.e. bags or backpacks. No physical contact is made and at least two staff members are present during the search. If any unapproved items are found, the appropriate consequence will be applied. Families will be notified if their student is searched and if there are any consequences applied.
For more information on the sensor, please visit www.halodetect.com.
We believe that these sensors and detectors will enhance our ability to maintain a secure environment for all students, staff, and guests. Your safety is of paramount importance to us, and we remain committed to taking proactive steps to ensure it.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this new safety measure, please do not hesitate to reach out to our administrator, Mrs. Andrew (candrew@cmitacademy.org).
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in making CMIT North HS a safer place for everyone!

Also, please read the attached documents to learn more about the foundation.
The following is the joint letter from the founder, Taraji P. Henson, and the executive director, Tracie Jade.
2023 marks the 5th year anniversary of The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation.
As we reflect on the past five years, we want to pause to express so much gratitude to our donors, partners, and community. Since our launch in 2018, we have remained committed to our mission of eradicating the stigma around mental health in the Black community.
We continue to dedicate ourselves to changing the narrative by speaking out, and encouraging others to share their challenges with mental illness and to get the help they need.
Through dedicated programming and services over the years, we have seen a significant increase in the participation and conversations around mental wellness, but we still have so much work to do. The systemic challenges that Black communities continue to face are deeply rooted. We are committed to breaking down the barriers to equitable access and positive change. We're excited about what we have planned this year and the impact we will continue to make with your help, as we strive towards mental health equity for all. Joy is indeed our birthright.

Hello, 9th + 10th Grade Families!
It was a pleasure to see so many of you at Back to School Night. I hope it was informative to see the spaces your students inhabit each day and that you got a good feel for the learning opportunities, high expectations, and resources that greet them each morning.
There are still two opportunities for you to connect with us this month.
The first is a virtual Family Meeting for 9th and 10th grade families that will take place on Thursday, September 28th from 6pm to 7pm. During this virtual session, Mr. Conde and I will recommend some strategies to monitor your student's performance as well as point you in the direction you should go to get clarification about the information you see. We will also discuss how to get progress report information from SchoolMax and when to consider reaching out for help.
The second is a virtual Coffee with Counselor + AP. This is also for 9th and 10th grade families and will take place on Friday, September 29th from 7am to 8am. This session will be more interactive and somewhat directed by you. For this first virtual coffee, we will recap some information from the previous nights' family meeting and listen to any questions or concerns you may have.
We hope you can join us for one or both of these. Please check your email next week for the link to join.
Ms. Colandrea
Assistant Principal, 9th + 10th Grades
Let Kindness Be Your Kind of Being
We are nearly halfway through the first quarter! Let's make this upcoming week a week full of kindness towards ourselves and others. Let's extend the grace towards those around us that we would love to experience when we don't measure up to expectations, when we mess up, when we drop the ball, or when we might not be performing to our highest potential. Here are some suggestions you can keep in mind:

September 28
Act of Kindness: Try to make a new friend today.

September 29
Act of Kindness: Try to create positive energy with everything you say and do.
