Dear Thacher Families:
I hope you all enjoy the final vacation week of the '22-'23 school year! Yesterday and today are a good reminder of how warm it can get in the building. As the temperatures rise, please make sure your children are dressed for warm classrooms. We recommend dressing in layers as our New England mornings can be too chilly for shorts and t-shirts, but the afternoons can be too hot for sweatshirts and jackets. We also recommend each student have a water bottle to help stay cool and hydrated.
Sincerely,
Frank W. Rich

Supporting Mental Health Over Breaks
Below is a short article sharing tips around supporting their child's mental health over vacation. Cliff Pereira, MA, School Psychologist
As a parent, it's important to prioritize your child's mental health, especially during times of transition like school vacations. Here are some tips to help your elementary school child maintain good mental health during the upcoming vacation:
1. Stick to a routine: While vacations are a time to relax and unwind, it's important to maintain some structure in your child's day. Try to stick to a regular sleep schedule and meal times to help your child feel grounded and secure.
2. Encourage physical activity: Exercise is a great way to boost mood and reduce stress. Encourage your child to engage in physical activity, whether it's playing outside, going for a walk, or trying a new sport.
3. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is a technique that can help your child manage stress and anxiety. Encourage your child to take a few minutes each day to focus on their breath and be present in the moment.
4. Connect with others: Social connections are important for mental health. Encourage your child to spend time with friends and family, whether it's through playdates, video chats, or other activities.
5. Monitor screen time: While it's tempting to let your child spend hours on their devices during vacation, excessive screen time can have negative effects on mental health. Set limits on screen time and encourage your child to engage in other activities.
By prioritizing your child's mental health during vacation, you can help them feel happy, healthy, and ready to tackle the challenges of the upcoming school year.
This Week in Music
This week in music, our younger grades have been working hard to make their own music! During our Hello Song, students have been improvising melodies by singing how they are feeling–as a result we have also been learning more complicated feeling words this week, like happy, sad, grumpy, loved, and silly. We have also continued learning new instruments: this week’s focus has been on egg shakers.
Upper grades have been learning how to read pitch names on the staff, which is helping tremendously with our ability to read our recorder music. Students are continuing to refine and build upon their prior recorder knowledge. We have also been practicing our singing skills and learning new songs and dances. This week, a favorite has been the Russian folk dance Sasha! Finally, a big congratulations is in order to our fourth-graders for a fantastic concert at Attleboro High. We are so proud of our chorus students for singing their hearts out with Panda Pride!
Our insights classrooms have begun a new unit. We are continuing to work on our fine motor skills with instrument playing. Free play instrument time also gives students choice while allowing us to focus on things like beat keeping and repeating short rhythm patterns. Students have also been exploring their voices through the use of puppets and story-board manipulatives that go with our class songs. As always, students are also continuing to learn how to be a part of a team, focusing on taking turns, asking for our needs to be met, and following directions.
Musically yours,
Mr. Chippo
