It's November! Issue #3
It's Read-A-Thon Season!
Every year, Beacon Hill International School gathers in November to celebrate reading! The Read-A-Thon is a fun day at school for students, emphasizing the joy and diversity of READING. This is an opportunity for students to connect with parents, caregivers, community members, teachers, and each other over the joys of reading.
This year’s Read-A-Thon will be held on Friday, November 17th during school hours. Students are invited to wear their pajamas to school for the Read-A-Thon. We are also thrilled to invite families (parents, caregivers, grandparents, etc) into the building to read to students.
There will be opportunities for families to come and read to their children’s classrooms. If you would like to sign up, click here to sign up to be a Read-A-Thon Reader!
Note: You MUST be a registered volunteer to volunteer at the Read-A-Thon.
A Friendly Reminder!
We still need volunteers!
Food Bank Drivers: Delivery day is every Wednesday. We would need you to drive to Rainier Valley Food Bank to pick up food and deliver to BHIS families. Pick up can happen any time after 10:30am. Any delivery amount would be great! From one Wednesday a month to every week, we would appreciate any amount of time you can help. Contact Adam Kennedy at adam.kennedy@beaconhillpta.org
Morning Traffic Circle: We still need people to help put signs out, bring signs in, and serve as crossing guards. Signs go out between 7am and 7:15am and are bought back in at 7:55am. Crossing guard duty would be 7:25am to 8:00am. Even if you can help one day a week, that would be great! Please contact revalentine@seattleschools.org
Free Dental Screening & Fluoride for all 2nd & 3rd Grade Students!
No Toys!
Should I keep my kid home or not?
Is my child too sick for school?
We recognize there are times when you are unsure if your child is too ill to go to school. If your child is experiencing any of these things, it would be best to keep them home.
APPEARANCE/BEHAVIOR- unusually tired, no appetite, hard to wake, or confused.
EYES- If there is drainage, vision change, and/or redness of the eyelid, itching, pain or sensitivity to light, this may be a sign of "pink eye" (conjunctivitis) and the student should be checked by a health care provider.
FEVER- temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees C) or higher. Students need to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school WITHOUT medications to reduce the fever.
BAD COLD AND/OR COUGH – Students need to be able to cover their cough to be at school. If a cough or cold persists for more than 2 weeks, the student may need to be seen by a health care provider.
DIARRHEA- 2 or more watery stools in 24 hours, especially if the student acts or looks ill. Students should stay home for 24 hours after the last watery stool.
VOMITING- vomiting 2 or more times in 24 hours. Student should stay home for 24 hours after the last time they vomited.
RASH- Bothersome body rash, especially with fever or itching. Some rashes may spread to others and should be checked by a health care provider.
INJURY/SURGERY - if students are unable to concentrate due to pain or pain medication, they should stay home. Please have your health care provider contact the school nurse to help your child safely return to school. Letting the school nurse know in advance of any planned surgery will be helpful.
STILL HAVE QUESTIONS about whether or not your student is healthy enough to come to school? Contact our school nurse, Coco Brown, at 206-252-2707 Wednesday - Friday 8am - 3:30pm clbrown3@seattleschools.org or your child's health care provider.
Keeping ill students at home, encouraging frequent hand washing, and covering coughs protects everyone, including those with fragile immune systems.
Students are expected to participate in all parts of the school day including recess or PE. If your doctor has restricted activity please send a doctor's note, for example: "No contact sports x 1 week."

$10,000 Raised for School Supplies!
Thank you to everyone who donated to our school supply fundraiser! We were able to raise $10,000 to go towards ensuring that each student had the right supplies for the school year. We truly appreciate the community members, local businesses, and family members who all chipped in to help. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Red Apple Receipts
Did you know? We are collecting Red Apple receipts! Red Apple donates 1% of all collected receipts to the school. You can deposit receipts in the red canister to the right of the front desk along the wall (by the PTA mailbox). We are also currently working on adding an additional all-weather dropbox near the playground entrance for easy access. Don't forget to drop your receipts next time you're at the school!
