ESL Specialists Invest in Learning
April/May 2023
Why ESL Specialists Need Professional Learning Opportunities
The benefits of working as an ESL Specialist are plentiful. We support new students and families, engage in discussions of how culture impacts learning every day, and explore the similarities and differences between the English language and multiple world languages. We also face challenges related to a lower number of ESL specialists in buildings or districts compared to other areas of education. This often leaves ESL Specialists feeling isolated and sometimes stressed about making instructional decisions without the benefit of conferring with another ESL colleague.
ESL Specialists need regular professional learning investment to navigate the teaching and learning challenges for all students and families enrolled in monolingual school districts. ESL Specialists also need the opportunities to interact with their ESL colleagues so they can participate in collaborative discussions and share resources to enhance instructional practices.
This newsletter highlights the benefits of specialized learning opportunities for ESL Specialists. The majority of the newsletter focuses on the experiences of ESL Specialists within Heartland AEA who recently attended the International TESOL conference in Portland, Oregon. We also offer information about annual in-person and online language conferences, which you may consider for the 23-24 school year.
TESOL International Convention 2023 - Portland, Oregon
Each year, a global community consisting of thousands of language professionals gather for the annual International TESOL Convention & English Language Expo. Offering over 900 learning sessions over four days and an additional 200 virtual learning sessions, this convention provides multiple opportunities for language professionals to engage in professional learning, build connections, and explore the latest language education products and practices.
In this newsletter, we highlight the experiences of educators across Heartland AEA who attended the International TESOL convention.

Daniel Cordova Gonzalez - Carroll Community School District
This year I had the opportunity to attend the TESOL convention in Portland, Oregon. I have never been to a conference outside of the Midwest before. When I arrived at the convention center I was amazed at how many people were attending this conference. There were probably more than five thousand people I was worried that I was not going to find a session that had basic information on new methods and ways to teach English to beginners and focused on K-12. but to my surprise, there were a lot of good sessions that I attended that had good information that was very useful for me.
One of the sessions I attended and gathered the most information on was “The advantages and disadvantages of the use of Google Translate”. The presenter provided really good data and tools to help other teachers in my district find ways to utilize google translate in a way that helps to improve the vocabulary of the student instead of just providing translation and creating dependency on machine translation.
Another session I considered very helpful was the session about Learning strategies to help learn vocabulary focusing on retrieval and bringing words and definitions to mind from memory.
The final session I considered very interesting for me was the one about the use of semantics and learning vocabulary through movement, music, and images to make neurological connections.
Thank you Heartland AEA for the opportunity to attend TESOL 2023.

TESOL 2023 was a very rewarding experience for the three of us. One of the essential themes of the conference was diversity, and we were able to hear a variety of speakers who reinforced the value of diversity in all fields, but particularly in education. A standout presentation was with Dr. Ramsey of the Boulder Bee Lab at the University of Colorado Boulder who shocked us all with his presentation on ways to think outside of the box and what the advantages are of appreciating diversity. We learned that even though there is merit in traditional educational structures, there is a great advantage to celebrating and supporting diverse learners of all types and backgrounds in our school.
We also learned the extreme importance of having a quality and positive relationship between teachers and those that bring suggestions to our school. This allows us to collaborate with other professionals who get to know our diverse learners and aid in the creation of meaningful learning strategies that are specifically targeted to our needs. Based on the research of professor Caleb Prichard from the University of Okinawa in Japan, EL instructors need to select strategies that will increase the English comprehension of students instead of relying on online translation tools such as Google Translate because their learning is hindered. Instead of developing their linguistic skills, they are learning how to use a tool. Google Translate is a good resource, but reliance on a program such as this only reinforces their comprehension in their native language.
One key takeaway that the three of us had was a feeling that Perry Community School District is on the cutting edge of EL instruction. Many of the sessions at the TESOL conference reinforced the strategies that have been implemented in our classroom already. This gave us confidence that the district is headed in the right direction with EL instruction. Perry should be proud of where we are and where we will be soon. We would all recommend that Perry staff members attend the TESOL conferences of the future as they are rich in strategies, supports, and new ways of thinking that have revitalized our way of looking at EL instruction. With our rich EL background in Perry, the three of us would find enormous value in continued engagement with TESOL. We have been discussing ways that we could lead a session at a future TESOL conference to share the successes and challenges that we have overcome in our diverse community.

Heartland AEA
Heartland AEA ESL/Diversity Consultants Present at TESOL 2023
The Heartland AEA ESL Diversity Consultants had the honor of presenting at TESOL 2023! On the right is a photo from this memorable experience.
Janet Eichenberger Hiatt and Cindra Porter co-presented with Minnesota and Oregon colleagues on the Teacher Leadership for School-wide English Learning (SWEL) Model that Heartland AEA has been piloting from 2021-2023. The model allows schools to hone the expertise of building and district-level ESOL teachers as professional development providers and coaches. It is a model that works in both urban and rural districts.
Most importantly, we celebrated our 12 certified SWEL Coaches:
West Des Moines CSD: Natalie French, Brenda Daisy, Deb Buford, Elizabeth Riche, Kelsey Flattery, Joan Severe, and Kim Alowitz
Newton CSD: BreAnna Blankman
Johnston CSD: Melissa Grinstead
Ames CSD: Shaeley Santiago and Amanda Wright
Adair-Casey & Guthrie Center School District: Sara Findley

After a long absence from attending TESOL 2023 in person, it was refreshing and inspiring to collaborate with other language specialists at an international conference.

In addition to the professional learning offered at each year 's TESOL convention, attendees have the opportunity to learn about new resources and how to apply them in multiple language learning settings. Prolingua Learning has updated their resources and made many of their grammar supports available free online for teachers.
Many EL Specialists reach out looking for instructional supports that help build foundational knowledge of English language structures because regular curriculum materials often only include limited rsources in their textbooks for English Learners. Prolingua offers Free Online Grammar Resources that are appropriate for secondary EL students and also offer laminated tri-fold student work materials such as this sample pronunciation card and writing reference cards to support students while working independently or in groups.
I highly recommend attending the TESOL convention for ESL Specialists who need to recharge and renew. I forgot how much I needed the opportunity to interact with other people who have chosen careers devoted to the learning of multiple languages. This conference added to my learning and resources and also renewed my commitment to support all people learning a new language.
