Hiking at Starved Rock State Park
On Oct. 10th, SAC hosted a hiking event with some students and their families at Starved Rock State Park in southern Illinois. The day started with students and their families arriving at 10 am. Before beginning the hike, everyone was provided with drinks, such as tea and coffee, and little snacks to help them prepare for the long day ahead. Once everyone arrived, the day of hiking on a 13-mile-long tail began! Throughout the hike, families, students, and school staff talked with their friends all while enjoying the beautiful scenery that Starved rock had to offer. After the hike, from 2 pm to 4 pm, everyone met back up at the original start point to enjoy lunch, grilled chicken, and talked about what they saw along the trail.
Artwork at SAC: Influenced by Naturalist Art
birds. Instead of going out into nature though, we searched books and Google to learn about three birds of choice.
Our students made their own naturalist bird pages in their sketchbooks that included drawings of birds from various points of view, and handwritten information
about what the bird eats, where it lives, what the bird is like when young, the differences between male and female birds, the bird's nest, unusual markings, beak shape, and much more. After making sketchbook pages about three birds of interest, our students made a watercolor
portrait of their favorite bird. Their painting shows the bird in a realistic way.
SOCIAL STUDIES ACTIVITIES: Middle School Students Study Ancient Civilizations and Life
As for 8th grade, the kids were learning about a momentous era in US history: the Civil War! Towards the end of the unit, the kids were charged with the task of telling the story of some of the final crucial battles of this war but by creating a comic book page. The goal was for the kids to use their imagination and creativity to tell fresh versions of these age old battles which the kids definitely delivered on!
