From Mr. Jeff Lavender, Interim Superintendent
Why are Teachers my Heroes?
As a lifetime sports fan, there are many professional athletes who I have admired, like Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, and Jack Nicklaus. These are the special moments I will never forget in their careers:
- Michael was playing with food poisoning in the NBA Finals and hit the winning shot.
- Joe led the 49ers on a 92-yard drive in two minutes to win the Super Bowl.
- Tiger won the US Open with a broken bone in his foot, while walking five rounds of golf at Torrey Pines.
- Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in the finals in four straight major tennis championships.
- Jack charging to win the Masters Golf Tournament at age 46.
Although these were all incredible accomplishments by these legends that required a lifetime of hard work, focus, and grit, none have had the same impact you have had as a professional educator.
Teachers are my heroes because very few people can do your jobs. The work is hard, and many days you are tired and feel like you are losing the battle. There is a start and finish to a sports game and the season. There is no ending in education because your actions will impact current and future generations. I recently ran into a former student from 1994 while teaching in Phoenix. He recognized me and told me how much I inspired him. I did the best I could to fake that I remembered him, given he was happy to see me and tell me thank you. Students may not remember what you taught them, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
Teachers are heroes because you keep trying to reach students, even when you think you are banging your head against a wall that will not move.
Teachers are heroes because you make the emotional health of your students a top priority. Teachers are often identified as the most consistent positive influence in students' lives.
Teachers are heroes because you engage students in hard work and create a safe learning environment in their classroom.
Teachers are heroes because you are present to support students as they process trauma in their lives. Your "good morning" and smile can change a student's mindset for that day. You create sunshine, not rain.
Teachers are heroes because you inspire students through your words, encouragement, and listening.
Teachers and heroes because you focus on learning and self-development, not just grades. You understand that character matters.
Teachers are heroes because you make decisions in the best interest of students, not yourselves.
Teachers are heroes because you understand that perfection may not be attainable, but are constantly striving to achieve it, no matter the frustrations.
Teachers are heroes because you never stop thinking about your students, sometimes losing hours of sleep. Your thoughts are always focused on how you can reach this student and that student.
Teachers are heroes because you embody other synonyms like role models, protectors, saviors, guardians, and champions of students' hopes and dreams.
Teachers are blessed because you have so many gifts that keep you returning each day and year. Thank you for sharing your extraordinary skills at CGUHSD.
You're building foundations that will last for generations. Thank you for being so dedicated to our students and community.
I hope these words serve as a reminder of why you chose to be an educator and why you are making a much more direct impact on the lives of your students than Michael, Joe, Tiger, Serena, and Jack.
Thank you to my heroes.
Jeff Lavender

Construction Technologies: 2019 Centennial Brick Project
(CGUHS) After a long journey, the 2019 Centennial Brick Project is complete. All levels of the CTE Construction Technologies program were putting their skills to work over the past four days. The project was planned and headed by Ethan Wood, who mostly subcontracted the hard labor to his classmates. The intern and advanced students led the way to proper elevations, the first-year students learned what a pick and shovel were, and the second-year students demonstrated their readiness to be advanced students by laying most of the bricks in one class hour time. In all, they did a great job and hope the community enjoys the new aesthetics. The project can be seen by all who visit the Al Van Hazel Stadium on the home side just past the cougar statue as it surrounds the James Seton Memorial Bench. Thank you to Pedro Reyes, Maintenance Supervisor and Construction Technologies alumnus, for helping with rock and sand material delivery on this tight schedule. More information will be coming soon for anyone interested in purchasing bricks. The Cougars are taught by Michael Wagner, CTE Construction Technologies Teacher.

Each year, the U.S. Department of Education rewards over $120 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds to more than 13 million students. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the only way to apply for federal, state, and college aid. It is completely free and it typically takes ONLY 30 minutes to complete. Scholarship Opportunities
It is a known fact college is expensive and the cost is rising. Do not let that deter you from applying for college. There are many opportunities to help you cover the cost of college. Scholarships are gifts of "free money" that do not need to be paid back, unlike student loans. Most scholarships can be awarded based on merit, which means that students earn them for having good grades, athletic talent, volunteering, or even for a certain demographic. Every year, hundreds of billions of dollars are awarded in scholarship money. There are many sources of scholarship, such as colleges and universities, military, individuals, communities, nonprofits, ethnic/historical organizations, businesses, religious groups, and more. Some scholarships are highly selective but many are not. The best practice is to apply for as many scholarships as possible and start early.
