November 2021 Edition
Principal's Message: November - A Time for Thanks and our CPPS Cares Food Drive!
Hello Hawks families,
As we roll into November, I am so excited to share with you about some of the awesome stuff that is happening in our school and with our students!
At the time of this newsletter, our athletics teams are dominating the SCAC league, with playoffs for football, Cross Country, and Volleyball! We are celebrating #1 seeds in playoffs for both XC and Volleyball with our eyes set on competing at state!
We have wrapped an October that started with Homecoming fun, included parent/teacher conferences, and ended with required state testing. We had Career Speakers coming in to talk to our students and have engaged in school-wide Naviance lessons around exploring post-high school opportunities!
As we now transition into a new month, it is important to remember that November is a time of giving thanks, and I hope you will find time this Thanksgiving season with friends, family, and loved ones to show, in the ways that make sense for your family, how you give thanks.
I am thankful for being a part of an amazing staff and community here in College Place.
One of the new traditions that we have started is in partnership with Walla Walla University's Eden's Pantry. Our CPPS Cares Food Drive brought in thousands of canned and non-perishable food items to the families in our community last year, and we are hoping to continue this legacy tradition for many years to come.
Our staff, student club members, and athletes will be participating and volunteering in this years CPPS Cares Food Drive in the month of November. We have planned for our Food Box Distribution for Wednesday, November 17 from 9:00am - 3:00pm at the Walla Walla University Church. Thank you for being a part of our amazing community!
In this edition of the Hawks Happenings Monthly Newsletter, we will share information with you about J Term, some of the amazing accomplishments of our students, Winter Sports registration information, and much more!
Also, a reminder that Thursday, November 11 is Veteran's Day and a No School day as we honor those who have served our country. We will celebrate Veteran's Day as a school during our Veterans Day assembly on Wednesday, Nov. 10th. Then on Wednesday, Nov. 24th we will run a half day early release bell schedule with both Thursday the 25th and Friday the 26th as No School days for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at raguilar@cpps.org

J Term 2021-2022
In our June 2021 Hawks Happenings newsletter, we mentioned that College Place High School was going to add a two-week J Term grading period, nestled between first and second semester in the middle of January. As we transitioned away from the trimesters structure to our now semesters structure, the idea of a two-week window of time where we could really look at "doing school differently" appealed to a wide array of stakeholders as we looked into this possibility.
On Tuesday November 2nd during Hawk Time, we will roll-out to our students the J Term registration process, giving students a week to read about the course offerings for J Term and talk to teachers about their courses, before having them choose their top five selections the following week.
We are excited about the possibilities of J Term for planting seeds of potential post high school ambitions, building stronger relationships with our teachers, and getting an opportunity to dig into true project based learning opportunities with these fun and dynamic courses.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Taking Donations! Incentives and Prizes at CPHS
Our counseling team is asking parents who are willing or able to donate to our "prizes and goodies" in any way that fits with you. That could look like donated foods, candy, drinks, or other trinkets/items that students might find silly or fun. These donations, combined with our school level rewards create a nice option of items for students to choose if selected for various recognition opportunities. You can drop off donations at the main office anytime between 8:00am-4:00pm. Thank you!
