News from Dr. Holcomb
We have been busy analyzing our data from the Winter FAST and iReady assessments. Our teachers have been using the data to make adjustments to WIN groups and Math Title groups as well as to make adjustments to targeted instruction with the classroom. Below you will find our specific building data as it relates to both assessments and our goals. The FAST Literacy data is first and the smaller graph is the iReady data.
Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up quickly. You will be receiving information in your child's Thursday folders today on how to sign up for a time to talk with their teacher. We look forward to this opportunity to share with you your child's learning.
The District is planning on offering summer school again this year at all elementary buildings. This opportunity is for students who would benefit from extra support in the areas of math and literacy. There will also be a focus on Science through a program called Camp Invention. Additional information will be coming.
We have been working hard with the Iowa PTA folks to go through the steps of getting our Bryant PTA reinstated. It has been a long, tedious process as their leadership and office locations have changed. Ms. Jen has been steadfast in her contact attempts and we believe we are close to having things ready to push out the greater Bryant community. Stay tuned as we are really working hard to get this group up and running once more.
Please check out the information below regarding the new District app. I think you will find that it is more user friendly and allows push notifications about upcoming events, school cancellations, etc.
Thank you for partnering with us in your child's education!

Arrival and Dismissal Reminders
For families that drop off students at the Kindergarten and middle set of doors on our lower level, we only have adults on duty there until 8:35. After that, you will need to bring your students to the front doors on Jones Street. We have had instances where adults outside are trying to get students who might be in the hallways to open doors for them and then the adults sometimes enter the building once that has happened. In order for us to keep everyone safe, we need to make sure that adults are accessing the building at the correct entrances. We appreciate your help in this matter.
Please remember to keep the lines moving both before and after school. The only lane for stopping is the red lane which is closest to the curb. The second lane should be in constant motion for those families that have already received or dropped off their students. Our adults on duty are meant to be there to ensure safety. Please do not drive around the adults with the stop signs. They are trying to cross adults and students safely. We know that everyone has places to be and many are trying to get to work on time so please be cognizant of that as you drop off and pick up your student.
Also, please remember that the staff parking lot is not a place to line up for student pick up. Many staff members have meetings or other jobs to get to after school and need to be able to exit their parking spaces. Students that dismiss from the building out the front doors are walkers. If they are being picked up, it should be away from the building.
We thank you for your help.
Please click on the following link to watch a video explanation of our dismissal. This video has been redone from last year's video, to adjust for the changes we have made this school year.

Costs for Damaged or Destroyed Devices Add Up
The District provides every student with a device to enhance the overall learning experience. When a student receives their device, it is their responsibility to take appropriate care of the device. Unfortunately, the District has hundreds of devices damaged or destroyed each year. In just the first few months of this school year, the District has already received 1,400 tickets for damaged devices including nearly 275 devices which have been destroyed. The high numbers result in significant costs including higher insurance costs for the District annually.
As noted in the Parent/Guardian and Student Handbook, the District may charge fees ranging from $20 for lost adaptors to $250 for device losses when repairs are required to a student’s device. Please remind your child about the responsibility that goes with having a device and encourage them to review the Student Device Program Acceptable Use Agreement, located in the handbook. Additional information can be found in Board Policy 581.12.
If your student has issues with their device, they may contact their school’s librarian assistant.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
