Bird's Eye ViewJune 2023
zoom_out_map

Superintendent: Mr. Rose

Hello Larries Community,

Welcome to the June edition of the 2022-23 school year's “Bird’s Eye View”. This month you will see small snapshots of the great things that are happening here at SLC! Our hope is you will continue to follow us every month, so we can continue to connect our great community with the students, staff, and programs to help maximize our students’ futures.

I want to personally thank everyone that came out to vote on our 2023-24 school budget. We will continue to do everything possible to provide the best overall educational experience we can for our SLC students. With our final large increase in Foundation Aid, your local tax levy support, and the federal money (restricted to certain areas only through the 2023-24 school year), we are going to continue to focus heavily on maintaining the current academic programs we have bolstered, while also finding ways to be that “central-hub” that is so needed with non-academic supports also. By ensuring this, we will continue to build, not only a solid educational community, but one in which “all students can attain their maximum potential in the future!”

  • Congratulations to all those that have been recognized for the outstanding work you are doing.

  • During the spring, SLC worked with local social media specialists and created three short videos to help show “What special things go on inside SLC” . We hope you enjoy the videos as each one showcases some of our great programs in the elementary, middle, and high school along with our students and staff that make the programs a success.

  • Just a reminder that the School District Library Referendum Vote is on June 20th, at the Badenhausen Library, between the hours of 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

  • Congratulations to all of our 3 -12 Band and Chorus members as well as their teachers on some great performances during the month of May.

  • Congratulations to all our Spring Sport Scholar Athlete Award winners, with a special shout out to our girls varsity softball team for earning the Scholar Athlete Team Award with a team average of (95.24). All this and Section X Champions this year, well done!

  • Please see the great news from our cafeteria and business managers on the CEP grant on free meals for ALL students next year (and hopefully for the next five years). Reminder: in order to maintain these, and other grants, we need ALL families to continue to fill out the Household Income Applications that we hand out at the beginning of each year. If you need assistance with filling these out, please contact Mel Cline in the cafeteria.

  • The administrators and I would like to thank Roman and Gabe Flannery and Olivia Bell, from Mr. Lafave's class, for helping us deliver treats during Teacher Appreciation Week.

  • High School Graduation will again be on our turf field on June 23rd. As of today, audience numbers will not be limited unless we need to move the ceremony inside.

Thanks for following and have a great June!

Mr. Rose

Badenhausen Library Vote

In January of 2023, The Badenhausen Reading Room submitted a petition to the SLC Board of Education requesting a referendum vote to establish themselves as a school district public library. According to Education Law 259, and guidance from the Comptroller and Commissioner of Education, a public school district must place on its ballot, a proposition to establish a school district public library and levy the taxes accordingly.

Although the passing of this vote will NOT affect your 0% tax levy increase from the school district, it would add a separate tax to the voters of our school district. The library is appealing to our community for funding in the line amount of $77,000. (This would roughly be $28-$32/100,000 of assessed home value).

The vote on this referendum will be held on June 20, 2023 at the Badenhausen Library from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Free Lunch and Breakfast at School for the Next 5 Years!

We are pleased to inform you that Brasher Falls Central School District will be implementing a program available to schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Programs called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This will start at the beginning of the next school year and will be available for at least the next five years as long as state funding continues.

All enrolled students of Brasher Falls Central School will be eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no cost to your household each day of the school year.

The District will be sending out a Household Income Application for other funding purposes as many programs within the school rely on this data. We encourage all families to fill out this

application and return to the district so we can maintain state and federal funding at the highest levels possible.

What Special Things Go On Inside SLC

During the spring, SLC worked with local social media specialists and created three short videos to help show our community what special things go on inside of our school district. We hope you enjoy the videos as each one showcases some of our great programs in the elementary, middle, and high school along with our students and staff that make the programs a success.

High School Principal: Mrs. Zender

It is hard to believe that the end of the year is quickly approaching. With that being said, I wanted provided you with information regarding Regents Exams. I know that Regents Exams have been inconsistently administered due to the COVID pandemic. Last June, Regents Exams were brought back and required for all students in a Regents-Level course. This will be the same for this year.

Here is some important information:

  • June 12th and 13th Finals will be administered in your classes. Chromebooks will be due this week in class. Your teachers will communicate the Chromebook (this includes the charger and cover as well) schedule next week. You must be present on finals day to take your finals. No makeup exams will be provided.

  • June 14th-June 22nd NYS Regents Exams are administered. SLC will administer the exams at 8:15 and 12:15 for morning and afternoon exams. You cannot be late for exams and must be seated and ready for directions at these times. If you are late (depending on time), you may either be refused admittance to the exam or have your time reduced to take the exam accordingly.

  • If you are coming to school for any reason during Regents days, all students must enter through the main office to sign in to your destination. You can only be in the building for school-related reasons (i.e. Senior Seminars for ELA, Review, etc.). You are to only be with the teacher you have signed in to be with and must remain there through your time in the building.

  • The bus runs do look different. Here is the schedule for you to review. If you have questions, contact Mr. Redmond in the bus garage and he can help you figure out your timing. Please contact him as soon as you know you have a need for transportation and he will add you to a list.

  • All lockers must be cleaned out and locks returned no later than Tuesday, June 13th, 2023. No materials will be stored for the summer and anything remaining will be thrown in the garbage during summer cleaning.

  • Summer School will be held from July 10th-August 17th. Though summer school is "virtual," SLC is requiring that all of our students who are repeating a course (i.e. you failed during the year) to attend in-person with support. We will have transportation, meals, and help from a staff member for you to navigate how to best learn in this environment. We will be sending the brochure out to families soon. I encourage you to reach out to either myself, the school counselors, or your teachers if you have any questions about how this pertains to your unique situation.

  • Finally, Congratulations to the Class of 2023! We welcome the community to our Graduation Ceremony on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 6:00 PM on the turf athletic field. Our rain location will be in our high school gymnasium and seating may be limited. Keep an eye out for more information related to the weather!

Golden Apple Award

Mrs. Jazan Tozier was the High School "Golden Apple" award winner for the month of May. She was nominated by one of her colleagues for this honor.

"Jazan is a great colleague. She helped me get acclimated and was there to answer any questions when I first started working here. She is a "team" player. Additionally, she is very knowledgeable about the special education profession. She cares deeply about students, and they recognize this. Many of my juniors and seniors have told me that she is their favorite teacher. She is the teacher that they will remember long into adulthood. Besides all this great stuff, she is really funny! She is what we all strive to be. Jazan is very deserving of this award."

Congratulations, Mrs. Tozier!

Would you like to recognize a staff member? Stop in and see Mrs. Zender or email her at kzender@bfcsd.org.

The People of SLC

Students in Senior Career Academy have had the opportunity to experience several careers within our community. The goal is to help students develop employability skills, and to expose them to a variety of fields. They have also considered what happens if the career someone chooses isn't what they expected, or hoped it would be. Part of that was interviewing people in the school community who have come to their careers in an unexpected way. For the past few months, Bird's Eye View has featured one of those interviews. This final interview was conducted by Jayden Barlow. She interviewed Mrs. Colterman, SLC’s elementary principal.

Mrs. Colterman's Story Mrs. Colterman's Story

zoom_out_map

When I was a kid, I never wanted to be like everyone else. I heard all of my classmates saying that they wanted to be teachers when they grew up, but I felt like that wasn't what I wanted. I felt like all of them were just sucking up to the teacher. Now all these years later, I'm in the same position that I told myself I would never end up in.

I attended the Allied Health program at BOCES in my senior year of high school and graduated, soon attending St. Lawrence University to get an education in pediatrics. It wasn't until an event in my developmental psychology class when we were watching children play together in a daycare, did I realize that my true passion was in the field of education instead. I decided to take an extra year of schooling at SUNY Potsdam and transferred there as soon as I could for the next semester. After graduating, I managed to find some substituting jobs and applied, so I could gain experience in a proper classroom setting before applying to get my Master's Degree in the fall. Once I got that classroom experience and could see everything from the teacher’s perspective, it made me realize that I was finally on the right path in my career.

I started as a student teacher. I eventually worked as a third-grade teacher for nine years and a fourth-grade teacher for one. Once I wanted another career change, I became a math coach for BOCES. After being a math coach, I eventually became a title grant writer for BOCES. I asked Mr. Hirschey, the former elementary principal, if he knew someone who wanted to work as a technical supervisor. One thing led to another, and I was writing him a letter of recommendation for that position, and soon we swapped employers.

One thing I love about being back in Brasher is that I get to have so many personal connections with the parents of my students, the faculty members in the district, and so many others. I’m so happy with the career that I have now, and I’m not sure that I’d ever want to change it. I enjoy what I do; I know that at times it can be a bit demanding for a job, but I still love it.

Senior Trip to Boston

Our seniors had a great time, learned a lot, and made lasting memories on their senior trip to Boston, MA at the end of May. Here are a few group photos of them enjoying their time together.

High School Guidance News

High School Guidance Counselors

Andrea Martin A-K

Rachel Roldan L-Z

Greetings from the Guidance Office!

As the school year comes quickly to a close, we would like to share some end of year information. If your child has applied to attend Seaway Tech next year, please remember they will need to have passed their classes, Regents exams, and be determined to be on track for graduation to attend the program they have chosen in the fall. Students who have earned a spot in one of the programs will receive a letter from BOCES with further details sometime this summer.

If your child fails any classes or Regents exams, we will be reaching out to you to register him or her for summer school during the last week of June. We strongly encourage students to attend if they have failed a class, so they can stay on track for graduation. Please see Mrs. Zender’s note above which gives more details about the summer school program.

Students in 10th grade who are interested in taking the PSAT in October of next school year should sign up in the Guidance Office by June 12th. We encourage any student who may be interested in attending college to take this exam. Registration and ordering for this exam must be completed by the end of this school year. The College Board will not allow us to add additional students in the fall.

Finally, student schedules for next year will be mailed home during the first week of August. This mailing will include a class change form if there are any changes he or she would like to make before the school year begins. Once the school year starts, students will be required to attend one week of the classes they have chosen before changes are considered. Our counseling staff is only in the office for a few weeks each summer. If you need to contact us, please reach out by email and we will get back to you when we are in the office.

We hope everyone has a wonderful summer!

Mock Trial Exhibition

The brand-new SLC Mock Trial team put on an intramural exhibition match this May in the Potsdam Town Court. Competing in front of their Attorney Advisor, Potsdam Town Justice David Haggard, students played the roles of attorneys and witnesses and tried the fictional case of the State of Lone Star v. Richard Grouper. Students were required to write and deliver opening statements, direct and cross-examinations, and closing arguments. They made and argued objections and presented exhibits of physical evidence. The jury, which included faculty and student members, found Richard Grouper "not guilty".

SLC Trap Club

The SLC Trap Club would like to thank all those who made donations to our team! The team had a great first season and cannot wait for the fall season to start. Everyone learned and improved this first season. We had our end of season Family Fun Day this past Saturday and the students had a great time! Pictured are Liam Marcil, Jace Sweet, Wylee Dishaw, Logan Marcil, Sophia Hartson, Hunter Francis, Dalton Mongomery and Darrick LaMay (missing from the fun day photo is Noah Holmes as he was away for baseball). We had three great coaches from Norfolk Rod and Gun Club that put in a lot of effort to help our students Chris Beckstead, Sue Smith, and Jordan Arquitt.

Middle School Principal: Mrs. LaBarge

Dear Middle School Parents,

We look forward to celebrating the many successes of our students at our awards ceremony this week. If your child is receiving an award, you will have gotten an invitation.

As a follow up to some items I shared last month regarding online safety, I hope to draw your attention to some recently released reports about the connection to students with mental health concerns. We HIGHLY recommend heavy monitoring of devices, and also limitations on usage. This is not a violation of their privacy. It is a huge step in safety, and addressing mental health concerns. We have seen concerning behaviors resulting from online influences from many students this year.

Summer Tips

As summer vacation is approaching, we wanted to send-off some tips that can help you and your child this summer. Below are some great suggestions!

1. Spend time outside! Don’t spend all summer watching tv and staying inside. Take this time to get outside. Go for a hike, take a walk, go to the park, go to the beach, camp, have a backyard bonfire.

2. Learn a new hobby. Whether it is planting a plant, fishing, cooking, painting, or something you have never thought of doing, learning a new skill is a great way to spend free time.

3. Eat a well-balanced diet. This is a great time to support your local farmers market. Try some new fresh vegetables and fruits!

4. Read. This can be a great way to explore and improve creativity.

5. Stay hydrated. It is important to drink lots of water!

6. Unplug from electronic devices and social media.

7. Keep and maintain a routine.

8. Create a sleeping schedule. Getting at least 8-12 hours of sleep at night is important.

9. Find healthy ways to cope with everyday stress. Using coping skills, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices can help refocus and calm down.

10. Stay positive! Challenging negative thoughts and making them more positive will help you feel good and better about yourself.

Elementary Principal: Mrs. Colterman

Hello SLC Family,

This summer we are hosting summer school in the elementary building, along with the summer rec program and many summer camps. I very much look forward to seeing all of the smiling faces throughout the month of July.

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration is open. Please do not wait to register your child. Spots are limited in UPK and much of our planning for kindergarten hinges on numbers. In order to best prepare for your child's kindergarten experience, we request that you register them sooner than later.

Dates to Know:

  • Friday, June 9 is Larries Day!
  • There is no school on Monday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.
  • Wednesday, June 21 and Thursday, June 22 will be 12:30 dismissal days for the elementary. Please plan accordingly.
  • Thursday, June 22 will be the last day of school this year.

Once again, I'd like to thank you for entrusting us with your child's education. Here is to a strong finish, and a safe and healthy summer!

Respectfully,

Mrs. Colterman

Pre-K Visit Mr. Rose's Office

Out of the blue, Mrs. Powers' Pre-K class stopped by to visit Mr. Rose. They came with a nice card they had all signed, and a cookie from the Town Line Market. While they were there, the little ones decided they wanted an actual tour of Mr. Rose's office, and one young man decided a ride in his chair might make his day. Mr. Rose then proceeded with chair rides for everyone and they even learned how to run Ms. Delisle's shredder.

Pre-K Goes to the Greenhouse

Ms. Tatro and her service learners opened the Greenhouse to all the Pre-K students! We were able to learn about plants and soil. Students were able to learn the benefits of the praying mantis to the environment, and how they bond with people. The students were introduced to the turtles that call the Greenhouse home, and loved every minute of it. It was a wonderful experience! More classes should come visit the Greenhouse, and see the amazing things happening in it.

A big thank you to Ms. Tatro and her service learners for this wonderful experience. Thank you for welcoming us to the Greenhouse and sharing your time with us!

Elementary Family Fun Night

SLC families enjoyed another fun night on the turf this May. Families worked together to get through different obstacles. Some of the obstacles were a blindfolded course, the floor is lava, pipeline pass and a run mat. Once again, we thank all the families that attend these nights and the teachers who help make them successful.

4th Grader Explore Indigenous Peoples' Tribes

Miss Miner's class explored Indigenous Peoples' tribes in New York State. Students were encouraged to create an artifact or art piece that represented something from that time period. These are some of the creative pieces that were brought in!

Kind or Cool?

Perry’s Pals learned that being cool isn’t what matters most! It’s more important to be KIND! As they listened to their May book, The Cool Bean by Jory John and Pete Oswald, they saw the cool beans doing lots of little acts of kindness! We were reminded of our Kindness Day earlier in the week when we challenged ourselves to be kind to people that are NOT in our classroom. We looked for opportunities to hold doors open, write thank you notes, play with someone that we don’t usually play with, give compliments, say hello to someone new, and even simply SMILE at someone! We wanted to pass on some smiles so we hope this RED NOSES picture brings a big smile to your face today!!!

Perry’s Pals are holding all of the books they have received this year, one book each month from September - June plus a few extras! They will have many options to read over the summer!

📚💙Thank you to all of our Scholastic Book Sponsors!!! 📚💙

Technology Tidbits: Mr. Welsh

As the end of the school year is approaching at lightning speed, and a time where children and your adults may spend more time alone and doing more online activities, it is time to send out some reminders on how to be safe online. Here are some tips to share with your family to help keep them safe when you may not be there to monitor online activities.

Connect only with people you know:

The old saying “don’t talk to strangers” is as important online as it is with people in person. We need to remind ourselves that not everywhere or everyone online is safe, and that children need to be reminded to only engage with friends or peers when online.

Be cautious about things you post online:

Provide your kids with a list of things they should never post online such a Personal Identifiable Information (PII) including their real name, birthdate, age, home address, phone number(s), etc.

Avoid sharing too much information:

Many of our devices and/or apps can let others know where your children are and can help predators find your children, so you should always be sure to turn these functions off. In addition, you should discuss with your children why they should avoid posting about events, parties, or activities that are they partaking in on social media sites.

Disclose inappropriate behavior:

Have an open line of communication with your children to encourage them to tell you when they experience any instances where they feel threatened with harm by someone online.

Webcams:

Be careful when using webcams and mobile devices with video capabilities. Remind your children to only share videos they create with family members, or trusted friends. Taking part in video chats with people they do not know, makes them vulnerable to online predators and cyberbullies.
