Van the Vanguard April Birthday
Happy birthday to ASU-Beebe's Van the Vanguard spirit mascot.
Originally unveiled in April 2015 as the new spirit character of ASU-Beebe, the Vanguard mascot was then designed by former Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) advisor Chad Miller in December 2015 following a campus-wide contest.
The Vanguard mascot pays tribute to the first newspaper publication on campus, which started publishing around 1951.
A vanguard is a group of people leading the way to new developments or ideas. The Vanguard has a special meaning for students, faculty, and staff as it represents the campus’ passion for ‘leading the charge’ in education.
SGA Clothing Drive for Disaster Relief
The Student Government Association is sponsoring a clothing drive to help those affected by the tornadoes that struck the Little Rock metro area and Wynne on March 31. The clothing drive will last until Wednesday, April 12.
Boxes to donate clothes are available in the Dr. Eugene McKay Student Center, in front of the Office of Student Life as you enter the main doors of the building. The clothes donated by the Vanguard community will be donated to a local donation center.
TRIO Student Support Services Spring Break Trip
Students in the TRIO Student Support Services program participated in an educational and cultural trip to Fort Smith and Van Buren over spring break.
The following is a summary by Lora Hauk, student development specialist for SSS:
The students toured the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith's art department, library, dining services and residence halls. Afterwards the students visited Van Buren, taking a free trolley ride that provided rich historical information about the city. The students also rode the Van Buren railway to learn more about its history from the historical buildings to the antique shops that lined the streets. The day ended with a great meal at Taliano’s Italian restaurant, which also resulted in a historical tour of the upstairs portion of the old renovated house to really get a feel for what it was like to live in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
Nursing Students Lend Hand in Disaster Relief
Thanks to our ASU-Beebe nursing program students, who performed community service hours April 4-7, while helping those in the Jacksonville and North Little Rock areas affected by the March 31 tornado.
Last week, the full time LPN students helped clear debris in North Little Rock area and the part-time LPN and RN students worked in the Jacksonville area.
