Mrs. Mare
By Mateya Wolters
Mrs. Boe is a Special Education teacher at Sargent Central and has a Bachelor's degree from MSUM majoring in Psychology and a Master's Degree from UND majoring in special education with an emphasis on autism spectrum disorders. We asked her if she likes teaching and she replied with "Yes, I love watching my students grow and learn new skills." Then we continued to ask her a few more questions such as how long have you been teaching at Sargent Central and she replied, “I taught high school one year before switching to elementary school. This is my third year teaching elementary special education in Sargent Central." She has a total of eight years of teaching. Then we asked her what some interesting facts were and she said, “I love to travel, read and I live in Oakes with my husband and own two dogs named Max and Maya."
This summer Megan Leigh Boe got married and is now Mrs. Mare (Mar-ay).
Mrs. Peterson
By Gabi Christianson
Mrs. Peterson is the 1st grade teacher. She has been a teacher for seven years and went to school at Sargent Central. When she graduated, she went to NSU in Aberdeen, SD. She went for an elementary ED and Early childhood degree. I asked her what is her favorite part about her job is and she said watching kids learn how to read! Here are some facts about her. She is married to Travis Peterson and they have a son named Nate. They live in Rutland. She loves to do crafts, fishing and spending time at the lake in the summer.
Mrs. Pratt
This month for Faculty Focus, we interviewed Mrs. Pratt. Before coming to Sargent Central, she used to teach at a military base overseas. Mrs. Pratt has been a teacher at Sargent Central for about eight years. She started as a 6th-grade teacher in 2014. The next year Mrs. Pratt switched with the new teacher, Mrs. Jenna Anderson, to become the 5th-grade teacher. As the years went on, she had pretty good years. Then as our school was changing, she got moved to the high school end to become the 5th through 8th-grade math teacher. We asked her what she felt about becoming a middle school math teacher. She replied with “It was challenging at first because I have never taught higher than 6th-grade level math.” We also asked what her favorite thing about teaching was, “My favorite thing about teaching is having different ages of students throughout the day, and I especially love being able to see them grow academically and personally over the years. I also love that I get to spend my days surrounded by kids. They keep me young at heart, even though they think I’m so old.”

Mrs. C, during all of her education years has been a Clam, a Hi-Liner, a Viking, an Oriole, a Cardinal, a Cadet, and a Bulldog. Her favorite part about her job is that she has most of her students from 5th to 8th grade, and a few from 9th to 10th grades. She gets to watch them grow, mature, and learn. She says she is, “lucky to have the best students here at SC." She has been teaching for 32 years and has taught every grade from 5th to 12th English, Spanish 1, 2, and 3, Applied communications, Fiction, Novels, and Reading. She also taught at Lidgerwood and Streeter-Gackle schools. Two facts about her, “If you don’t find me fishing, you will find me reading.” She has two sons and two (soon) granddaughters.
Mr. Koppang
Mr. Koppang has been teaching at Sargent Central for six years and he is the PE teacher. He said that the kids' favorite games to play are Mat Ball, Clean up Your Backyard, British Bulldog, Ghostbusters, and Busy Bees. Mr. Koppang also explains that if he were not a teacher, he would still be working with sports, such as a coach, athletic director, or working with the school. While teaching here at Sargent Central, his favorite memory was meeting his wife who was also a first-year teacher when he started. He wanted to become a teacher because he really enjoyed having his high school PE teacher and football coach, Mr. V.

The 57 Bus
By Nevaeh Keller
“One teenager in a skirt. One teenager with a lighter. One moment that changes both of their lives forever. If it weren’t for the 57 bus, Sasha and Richard never would have met. Both were high school students from Oakland, California, one of the most diverse cities in the country, but they inhabited different worlds. Sasha, a white teen, lived in the middle-class foothills and attended a small private school. Richard, a black teen, lived in the crime-plagued flatlands and attended a large public one. Each day, their paths overlapped for a mere eight minutes. But one afternoon on the bus ride home from school, a single reckless act left Sasha severely burned, and Richard charged with two hate crimes and facing life in imprisonment. The case garnered national attention, thrusting both teenagers into the spotlight.”
Dashka Slater’s The 57 Bus begins as Richard, a sixteen-year-old African American boy from Oakland High School, and Sasha, a genderqueer senior from a private school in Berkley, board the number 57 bus in Oakland, California. Sasha is agender, which means that they do not identify as either female or male and to them, clothes don’t have a gender. Sasha’s skirt captures the attention of Richard and his friends. Richard holds a cigarette lighter to Sasha’s skirt as a prank and sets the fabric on fire. This leaves Sasha in a burn ward in the hospital and months of recovery ahead of them. As a result of this prank, Richard makes international news and he’s charged with two hate crimes and faces life imprisonment.

The End of Bulldog Volleyball Season
By Abigail Erickson
To continue into regionals, the Bulldogs won against Enderlin in three sets! We wrapped up our season with a loss to Central Cass on November 5. It was a well-played game, but the little mistakes were what killed us the most; however, it was one of the toughest fought games of the year. It was a hard goodbye to our seniors, but the rest of us are ready for club volleyball to start in the spring and for league this summer!
FCCLA
By Gabi Christianson
Gabi Christianson attended District 5 Rally in Jamestown, ND on Wednesday, October 27th. Other students there were from Cooperstown, Wimbledon, Valley City, Lisbon, Milnor, Gwinner, Forman, Oakes, Ellendale, Lamoure, Edgeley, Wishek, Napoleon, Linton, and Steele. Sheyenne Waletzko, our District 5 President, called the meeting to order. The new presidential candidates were introduced and asked questions that related to FCCLA. The voting delegates from each chapter selected Cara Waletzko to be our new District 5 President.
Other activities that the students could do were tying blankets for the Linus Project, making greeting cards for each chapter, Kahoot, and FCCLA Olympics. Installation was held and Gabi was installed as the District 5 Vice President of Public Relations.
Our next activity will be the Star Events Competition in February. Getting a high score or “gold” there determines who will attend FCCLA State Convention in Bismarck in April.
Film Dudes
The Film Dudes are a subsidiary of NDstrong that is focused on residency film programs at various academic levels. They travel to North Dakota schools throughout the year, make films with the students, and teach them about filmmaking and the process. Film Dudes is run by two men, Matthew Maldonando and Eric Thoemke. They came to Sargent Central last year and filmed the parody Paula Blart: Hall Cop. We had the privilege to welcome them back on Tuesday, November 16th-18th and November 22-23.
The first three days were spent coming up with the idea for the trailer and filming, which finished a bit earlier than anticipated. The following Monday and Tuesday were spent spent making mini- films with each high school class throughout the two days. This year the trailer was a parody of The Hunger Games.

Mass Media
By Gabi Christianson
A big part of our Mass Media class is doing the school newsletter. However, we also study about the media in our society. Lately, we have been studying the media of newspapers and magazines. Some of the topics in newspapers and magazines that we have been learning about are: 1. The anatomy of a newspaper, 2. the forms of magazines, 3. who reads what, and 4. The first amendment. In addition to these topics, we have also studied 1. scandals, 2. the Op-Ed page, 3. headlines, 4. supermarket tabloids, and 5. paparazzi. In the future we will begin studying the media of Internet.

The 7th graders are finishing up their monster pillows (which we talked about last month) and they’re starting to learn the pieces of cooking equipment. They are going to start cooking super soon! They’re going to make homemade cookies for their first project.
First Grade Highlights
The First graders have been very busy this month! They have been practicing their reading skills. While practicing their reading skills, they learned their long vowels and digraphs. In math, they have been learning all kinds of strategies to help them count to 20. The first graders have been busy working on art that’s all about Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. They made patriotic art for the Veterans Day program held on November 10 by the PreK-12 choir. They have also been disguising turkeys so that they would be safe on Thanksgiving day.
Book Club
The students in book club have completed three books so far. They meet once a month and talk about the book that they read. Mr. Askerooth and Mr. Banderet help pick out questions for the students to discuss their books. The books they have read are Lord of the Flies, Tangerine, and Jurrassic Park.
