LV Primary Parent News
December 13, 2023
Primary Bears,
This year, we reflected greatly on our daily homework, and instead we asked that families read each night with their children. In addition to growing vocabulary, daily reading together has so many other benefits. Research shows the effects of reading on child development include cognitive and emotional benefits, such as helping children develop language skills and literacy, build empathy, and learn how to handle challenging feelings.
In addition, reading before bed shows to help adults. Grabbing a book before bed helps de-stimulate the brain. One study found that people who read before bed improved their sleep quality compared to those who did not. Reading before bed helps increase melatonin production by relaxing the body and relieving the thoughts that keep you awake.
Mrs. Saulter, our librarian, has sent home the Schlitterbahn reading challenge. This Christmas break, read together, share favorite stories, and earn free Schlitterbahn tickets at the same time!
Sincerely,
Shelley Keck
Principal

Cell phones at school
We are seeing more and more students bring cell phones to school. Please remind your student the phone needs to be off and put away for the entire instructional day or the phone will be taken up.
Per Student Handbook:
The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes. [See Textbooks, Electronic Textbooks, Technological Equipment, and Other Instructional Materials.]
Any unauthorized use of a personal telecommunication device (cell phone, tablet, laptop, and smart watches) will be subject to disciplinary action to include the collection of items and submitting them to the principal’s office. The principal will determine whether to return items to students at the end of the day or to contact parents to pick up the items.
If a student uses a telecommunications device without authorization during the school day, the device will be confiscated. The student/parent may pick up the confiscated telecommunications device from the principal’s office for a fee of $15. The campus personal device agreement will be followed.

A few highlights:
-A student cannot miss more than 15 days a school year (excused or unexcused).
