We Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King
Message from Mrs. Phelan
Greetings Lowell School!
'The Embrace' was unveiled yesterday on the Boston Commons. It's a wonderful contemporary tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. I'm hoping to visit the statue this weekend and see it up close. I hope it inspires us all to embrace the timeless message of love and peace.
Back History Month officially kicks off Tuesday. Our Diversity Inclusion and Belonging Council believes that Black History Month should be longer, and should not be limited to just February. We believe that it should start on the weekend of MLK Day in January and last throughout the year. This way, we can honor the rich history of African Americans and celebrate their contributions to our society. By starting Black History Month on the weekend of MLK Day, we can ensure that it is given the attention and respect it deserves. We can also ensure that our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging is reflected in our celebration of Black History Month.
MLK Jr. was a fundamental force in the education and civil rights movements and his legacy continues to inspire people of all ages today. He was a major advocate for Black History Month and was firm in his belief that everyone should enjoy an equal and quality education. He believed that education was a foundational part of the civil rights struggle and stressed the importance of understanding the history and experiences of African Americans. Moreover, he knew that education was the key to unlocking the door of opportunity and that knowledge was the foundation for individual and collective success. He was also a strong believer in teaching and learning about the culture, history and accomplishments of all people, regardless of their backgrounds. MKJ Jr.'s commitment to education was instrumental in helping to bring about positive change in our society today.
With Gratitude,
Stacy

Grade 3 Project Description:
Grade 3 students listened to the poem/illustrated storybook Change Sings by Amanda Gorman. In the book, there is an image of a mural including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many words that reflected his messages. Students chose the word that they felt was most important to create into a drawing and then printed their backgrounds with the foil monoprint technique.
Grade 5 Project Description:
Grade 5 students listened to the poem/illustrated storybook Change Sings by Amanda Gorman. Students then reflected on the book's call to action and the messages of Kingian non-violence. Students then created an illustration with the prompt "Choosing Peace".

In the Event of Inclement Weather (School Closures or Delays)
We live in New England, and whether we love them or hate them, snow days may be just around the corner. As such, please review the information contained in this section regarding school closure protocols. State law requires 180 days of instruction and also requires that any school closures (“snow days”) be made up before June 30. In the case of inclement weather or school closure for emergency reasons, information about school closures will be:
-Posted on the District’s website (www.watertown.k12.ma.us), the WPS Facebook page (@watertownpublicschools) and the WPS Twitter feed (@watertownschool)
-Emailed to parents and staff from the Superintendent’s office via the District’s messaging service
-Broadcast to the following stations
- WCVB Television (Channel 5)
- WHDH Television (Channel 7)
- NBC Boston (Channel 10 and NECN)
- WFXT Television (Channel 25)
- WBZ Television (Channel 4)
- WBZ Radio (AM 1030)
Some television stations provide a free text alert service notifying of closures and delays (e.g., www.fox25boston.com/weather/closing-login). We will post on the above locations as soon as the decision is made.
