Davis Elementary Principal's Newsletter
October 1, 2023
Dear Davis Families,
It's hard to believe it's already October! Last week, we had a good turnout for the WatchD.O.G.S. kick-off meeting. Thanks so much to Travis Schrader and James Anderson for coordinating this volunteer program. We all love WatchD.O.G.S. and can't wait to see them helping out at Davis!
Our FLEX language lessons are off to a great start this year. We're so happy to have a full team of FLEX language teachers supporting Davis and all of the Anderson vertical team elementary schools. Check out the FLEX newsletter below for more information about what to expect this year with the FLEX program.
We've got picture day this Tuesday for all students. Just a reminder that you must sign up to be able to see proofs. See the Dojo post for what you need to do. Tuesday evening is Dine with Davis, where you can get a really good meal and benefit Davis. You'll also see details below about two Thursday events- Principal Coffee and CAC meeting. I hope to see many of you at these events.
Looking ahead to next week, Monday will be a student holiday for staff professional learning. Next week is designated as Custodian, Groundskeeping, & Transportation Appreciation Week and we look forward to showing appreciation for all of these folks who support our school.
Thank you for being a part of Davis!
Kind regards,
Jenny Daniels Principal, Davis Elementary

FROM THE HANDBOOK: Cell Phones, Smart Watches, and Handheld Electronic Devices
AISD policy permits students to possess cell phones and smart watches. These devices must remain turned off and out of sight during the instructional day. At Davis, the same rules apply for all other hand held electronic devices as well. If a student is using a personal device in class, the teacher will take possession of it for the duration of the school day the first time this happens and return it to the student to take home at the end of the day. If it happens another time, the parent will be contacted to pick up the device and it will not be sent home with the student.
AISD NEWS
AISD MILLION MINUTE CHALLENGE: The AISD Million Minute Challenge is a healthy reading competition between schools, and all students in grades PK-12 are encouraged to participate by reading and logging minutes using this form. All reading counts! See some of the examples below:
Books
Audiobooks
MackinVIA
eBooks
IXL
Graphic novels/comics
Newspapers/magazines
Epic Books Online
Read aloud
Last year, AISD students logged over 2.5 million minutes during the AISD Million Minute Reading Challenge and we hope to break that record during this year’s challenge.
ATTENDANCE WARNING LETTERS: 3-Day Attendance Warning letters will go out to families of students who have 3 or more unexcused absences on the last Monday of each month. When a student misses a day of school, they miss a great deal of learning. Additionally, every day a student is absent from class, AISD loses $35 (at minimum) in revenue from the state. If we raise the attendance rate by just one percent district-wide, it would result in an additional $4.5 million per year in state revenue. Please do all you can to make sure your child attends school every day.
