“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
-Fred Rodgers
The halls are empty and the playground is quiet but the Gibbons School spirit can be felt beyond the walls of the school. It’s felt when teachers connect with their students. It’s felt when a staff member calls a home to check on a student. It’s felt during a Kindergarten Google Meet or a fifth grade Zoom session.
The global pandemic has challenged parents and educators in a way most of us never anticipated. Our educational system, especially at the elementary level, was designed to take place in a building full of students, teachers and support personnel. Within one month we have taken this system, which evolved over the past two hundred years, and moved it out of the school and into the virtual world. All of this occured at a time when parents and caregivers were forced to work from home or leave their house to perform an essential task.
I am amazed (but not surprised) with the response from the Stoughton community. Thousands of meals have been distributed from the O’Donnell Middle School. School Department employees have risen to the occasion in so many different ways- helping to prepare meals, cleaning and disinfecting the schools, getting over 1,000 chromebooks into the hands of our neediest families and in other ways both seen and unseen. Teachers, counselors and other school staff members have set up Google Classrooms (some seemingly overnight) to provide their students with the best type of educational experience possible during this difficult time. Parents and caregivers have dropped off donations to the food pantry, picked up meals for a neighbor or checked on the well being of a friend.
The halls will once again fill with laughter. Playgrounds will once again be a cacophony of energy and joy. Together we will get through this. Please call or email if you need help . Even though the building may be empty, have faith we will always be here for you.
