Mrs. Andrea Ferguson, Principal
We have had a great start to the 2018-2019 School Year! In my 16th year in education and my first year as Coy's building principal, this was the most exciting start of the school year yet! A new year is a chance for new friends, new goals and better grades. A chance to make better choices knowing we are a little older and a little wiser than last year. We have such amazing students, staff and families! Please know; you are valued, you are appreciated and it is an honor to be your principal.
Throughout the first few weeks, students have been learning all about our building expectations that are framed by the acronym PRIDE. We expect our students to be Problem solvers, be Responsible, have Integrity, be Dependable, and have Empathy. Students can earn tickets for going above and beyond these expectations and cash these tickets in for a chance in our weekly drawings or items from our school store.
Stay up to date on school happenings by checking out our website. Daily announcements are listed under "News and Announcements" or under the "Parents" tab on the Coy website.
Thank you for all of your support in making Coy a great place to learn and grow!
Meet Mr. Josh Baker, Assistant Principal
Hello Coy families! I currently reside in Kettering with my wife Katie of 9 years, and our daughters Audrey (age 5) and Anna (age 3). Prior to joining Coy Middle School, I taught in the Centerville City School district for ten years as one of the district band directors. In Centerville, I taught various music courses and instrumental ensembles in grades 6-12 at Centerville High School and all three Centerville Middle Schools. I also served as the principal designate of the East Unit at Centerville High School for five years. Before teaching in Centerville, I taught grades 5-12 instrumental music for the Greeneview Local School District.
I am a graduate of Wright State University where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Music Education. I completed my master’s degree in Educational Leadership and obtained my K-12 principal’s license through the University of Dayton. In 2015, I was named the outstanding alumni of Wright State University’s School of Music and in 2017 I was named the Centerville Education Foundation Outstanding Teacher and Hall of Fame Inductee. I am a lifelong learner and am constantly looking for ways to improve educational experiences for students. In my spare time, I enjoy being with my family, traveling, and listening to music. I am very excited to be a part of Coy Middle School and look forward to working with our incredible staff, students, and parents!
Our staff was excited to welcome our students back to school!

Coy Middle School Guidance Office
Welcome back to school!! We are so excited to see all of our students’ smiling faces in the building. We wanted to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and what we do here at Coy.
As counselors we work directly with students, staff and parents. Our primary goal is to advocate for and support Coy's students. We consult and collaborate with teachers, administrators and families to enable our students the opportunity to achieve success in school and become responsible and productive members of society.
Mrs. Mann works with students with last names beginning with the letters A-K, as well as IEP students.
Ms. Siders works with students with last names beginning with the letters L-Z, as well as SAT and ESL students.
This year we are lucky to have a school counseling intern in our office, Miss Hamilton. She will be working alongside us and we are thrilled about the opportunities she will be able to provide our students.
Please see below for upcoming classes offered by TCN Behavioral Health that are offered free of charge!

Attendance Reminders and How to Access our Attendance Policy
We love seeing our Coy students at school! We understand there are circumstances when your student will have to miss school, but please follow our Attendance Procedures to ensure that you are complying with House Bill 410 to have your student properly excused. Please account for your student every day by emailing or calling the office to notify us of any absences, late arrivals, or early dismissals.
Parent/Guardian may submit 10 parent notes (or phone calls) documenting an Excused Absence reason. After the 10 notes are exhausted, medical notes will be required for absences to be excused.
Reasons for Excused absences include illness, death in the family, pre-approved family vacations (up to 5 days), observation of a holiday, etc. (other reasons may be included). Medical appointments are always Excused with a medical note. Medical notes must be provided within 3 days of absence. After 3 days they will be marked Unexcused.
An absence is Unexcused if your student overslept, missed the bus, running late, car trouble, family vacation without approval (or over 5 days), or student refusal to go to school (other reasons may be included).
Please check out all attendance procedures at coy.gocreek.org. Information and forms can be found under the Parent tab, Attendance Information.
From House Bill 410: "It is important for every student in Ohio to attend school every day. Missing too much school has long-term, negative effects on students, such as lower achievement and graduation rates."
Thank you for your support!
A Note from the Cafeteria
Make sure to check your student’s lunch accounts to ensure they have sufficient funds. You can access your student’s lunch account and deposit funds via https://www.spsezpay.com/BCmeals/login.aspx.
Please call Cindy Steeley at 458-2531 if you have any questions.

PBIS: What is School-wide PBIS?
One of the foremost advances in schoolwide discipline is the emphasis on schoolwide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. Instead of using a piecemeal approach of individual behavioral management plans, a continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings (such as hallways, buses, and restrooms). Positive behavior support is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining Tier 1 supports (universal), Tier 2 supports (targeted group), and Tier 3 supports (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all children and youth by making targeted behaviors less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.

Coy Middle School PTO News Flash
President’s Message
Hello! My name is Jenny King and I am the new PTO President this year. I’m only one of many awesome folks who have come together to contribute to our amazing school. We’d love to have you join us. There are so many ways to contribute, both great and small. Teacher Assistants are a huge help to our educators and spend time once a week grading, sorting, and copying papers. There are also several one-time events where we can use an extra pair of hands: kiosk duty, chaperones to our dances, and various other events during the year. Stay connected by joining our Facebook page and sign up your phone for Remind to receive text reminders. Come to our monthly PTO meeting and share your ideas. Together we can make this one of the best years for CMS and our kids. Thank You!
