Principles Message
Hello Parents and Guardians,
As a principal in a middle school, my number one job is to create a school environment where both students and teachers feel safe (physically, emotionally, and mentally) to teach, learn, innovate, and socialize. I take my job very seriously, as does my staff members.
I can’t begin to describe how much time I spend every day dealing with issues that stem from unsupervised cell phone usage by our students. In the situations where I have to investigate Instagram, Snapchat, and other platforms, I often worry about our students and what I find (highly inappropriate photos, videos, messages, social media usage, etc.). The things our students are willing to try and be a part of at such a young age gets worse and worse every year.
When I call parents to inform them of what is going on, I always ask them how often they look through their kids’ phones. Most of them say hardly ever. I work hard with my parents to fix the situation. I have often contacted the sheriff’s department to get some sites down that are mean and make fun of many of our students, creating an unsafe school environment on campus.
Let me remind you, it is your number one job as a parent to get in your kids’ way at all times! Go ahead. Open their bedroom door. Ask them for the phone to look at their activity. Kids do not deserve privacy without accountability. You own their devices…not them. You should be having hard conversations with them about their social media usage and the issues their choices have on other people in their lives.
And finally, do not let them take their phones into their rooms, shut their doors, and disappear for hours. Nothing good ever happens on the internet behind closed doors. The online world is by far the most dangerous place our students go to every day. We can’t assume that they will intuitively know how to navigate the dangers of the online world on their own.
You need to learn how to navigate their world. Inform yourself on how to use certain apps. Keep up with what apps that are the most downloaded in your App Store. Make your kid show you their content and conversations and explain to you what is going on. Then give them advice. Teach them how to block a person being mean instead of feeding into the situation.
If you are looking for apps to watch over your child’s usage, here are a few good ones:

Ishi Hills Climate Corner
Ishi Hills had a Kindness Week Challenge, January 24-28. The students had a great time being kind:
Monday - sit with a new person at lunch
Tuesday - say hi to ten new people
Wednesday- write positive comments on wristbands during lunch, make two; keep one give one
Thursday - say thank you to our school cooks
Friday - say something nice to our Campus Supervisors
We are so proud of our student promoting a climate of kindness with the support of our Student Council.
The students wrote something kind to give to a friend
Students worked together to make a positive sign at Ishi.

The Axiom in Oroville
Hello Ishi Hills Middle School,
In the next few months, we have some inspiring events and opportunities happening here at The Axiom! There will be many ways for you to give and support our mission and goals as we head into the holiday season.
FIRST, The Axiom is hosting a Spaghetti Feast for our students and their families on November 19th. We still need a few more donations of food to help feed everyone. Along with sharing a meal with our student's families, we want to bless our low-income families with a grocery store gift card. Buying a holiday meal can be costly, and many do not have the funds to buy all of the ingredients.
Our goal is to bless 50 families with a $40 gift card. Already, many have donated gift cards or cash to bless our Axiom family this Thanksgiving.
SECOND, we are participating in this year's North Valley Community Foundation, WEEK OF GIVING! It will be a week-long fundraiser from November 30th-December 5th.
Last year, we raised around $15,000 with your help, and I have complete faith that we can do this again! This fundraiser helped us better care for our students with their academics, work training opportunities, and so much more. It is an easy way to bless and care for our youth.
If you are looking for an end-of-year donation opportunity, this is a great option. Each donation has the potential to go further with incentives provided by NVCF.
Our volunteers and staff have jumped right in to make every student feel comfortable, welcome, and loved. We know this year will be great, and students' lives will be forever changed simply by having adults speak hope and love into their lives each day at Axiom.
Thank you for supporting Axiom and partnering with us.
