Waukazoo Newsletter

Principal Report:
We are so excited to see you all tonight at Waukaboo! It begins at 6pm. We hope your family enjoys this Waukazoo tradition. We are thankful for our PTA for sponsoring this event for our school and are so excited for all the events to come this year!
I also wanted to share a couple of notes about ways your family can help us at Waukazoo:
- Parking Lot- Please be cautious in all parking lots around our building. Even in the back parking lot, please practice safety by keeping your students and other children close to you when walking across the lot. Please also be as vigilant as possible during drop off and pick up to help make sure our students and families stay safe.
- Student absences- If your student is absent due to sickness, appointments, vacations, or other obligations, they will be given time to complete work for their classes following their absence. Teachers will be able to distribute make-up work following an absence and help them through that process. However, please consider that while completing the work is important, it cannot replace missed instruction. For some perspective, please see the graphic below about the importance of attending school.
Thank you, and have a great weekend!
Best,
Audra

Hello Waukazoo Families!
We have been having a blast in the Music Room with songs, movements, and rhythms! We have also been working on our songs for Veteran’s Day.
Young Kindergarten (Lang) and Kindergarten (Tyler) are working to establish a firm musical foundation. They are working on songs to become “tuneful,” steady beat activities to become “beatful,” and expressive movement activities to become “artful.” Kindergarten has been playing many simple percussion instruments as they explore animals that live on the farm.
First Grade (Aalderink) and Lower Montessori (Klinger) have been laying the groundwork for reading rhythms and working toward keeping a consistent steady beat. They started a new echo song called Charlie Over the Ocean, and they are enjoying a rhyme about a spider. We hope to add instruments to their rhyme soon! The older students in the Montessori Class have been able to assist and model for their younger classmates, while simultaneously strengthening their musicianship.
Fourth Grade (Pustover) has been working on syncopated rhythms, and they started a new call and response song called Hill and Gully. They are also working to learn notes on the Treble Staff. This will become extremely important as we begin recorders this year.
Fifth Grade (Foy) has been working to add to the rhythm work they have done in the past. They have also been discussing Time Signatures and major and minor keys. They are singing and accompanying a song in a minor key called “Spider Stew.”
Thank you for taking the time to read about what’s been happening in the Music Room! Please continue to encourage your students to sing and make music outside of the classroom!

As part of growing our program, we host a Try Hockey for Free event multiple times a year. Our big fall event is just a few weeks away. Hopefully many of these players will be future West Ottawa Hockey players!
Our events are free and we provide all the equipment and instruction. We are also a non-profit organization dedicated to making hockey more accessible to those who would like to participate.
We would like to be able to connect with elementary students in the area to show them the fun in hockey. This is where we are hoping to partner with the local schools in a few different ways.
- Is there a current process for us to be able to share this information with students? Such as a weekly newsletter?
- Are we able to drop off flyers to post on any billboards?
- Is it possible to showcase hockey during any of the elementary PE classes? We have volunteers that would be happy to join a class.
- Are there any other ways you would recommend to connect with students?
Here is the information for the upcoming event. Flyer attach
