A Note from Mr. Hamilton, Principal
Greetings!
I certainly hope your summer is off to a fantastic start! As your children engage in their summer activities and involvements , we continue to build and plan for the upcoming school year, which will be here before we know it.
In this communication, I've included some information regarding summer opportunities, ways to stay connected, and ideas for keeping your child's literacy progression alive and well.
You'll also notice the 2022-2023 school calendar attached. We are closing in on additional specifics relative to Open House, K Orientation, etc. Be looking for that information in upcoming communication pieces, including the Rocket City News and ensuing smore newsletters.
Your kiddos are missed, and we can't wait to reunite with them soon.
Enjoy your summer!
Cody

Summer Reading
Below you'll find some ideas for supporting your Rocket Reader throughout the summer. Consider focusing on Excitement. Research shows that when we generate excitement around reading and writing, literacy engagement increases, and the desire to read grows. Avoid incentivizing reading through non-reading-related prizes. Instead, create motivational moments of joy!
A few ideas:
- Write to a friend or relative
- Read at the beach
- Visit a library
- Book swap with a friend
- Visit a Rocket City Book Exchange
- Read in nature
- Observe nature and write about it
- Deliver a written affirmation
- Write about a favorite summer experience
- Create a summer journal
- Generate your own summer list to best fit your family :)

Capturing Kids' Hearts
During the school year, teachers and staff at Central help students feel welcomed and loved at school using programming through Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH). Many of the tenets of CKH can be useful at home as well. For example, in every classroom, students build a social contract with their teacher the very first few days of school. This contract outlines how people want to be treated and what to do when conflicts arise. The contract is signed and posted in a spot where it can be viewed, referenced, and revisited often. This same practice can be a powerful tool to use as a parent. Since children are already used to this process at school, it could be something to try in the home as well! We will continue to share small ways to implement CKH in newsletters to come. For now, consider building a family social contract :)
