Spring Newsletter 2022
President's Message
For the past 25 years, I have had the pleasure and honor of being the President of Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports. I consider this organization to be one of the premier organizations for honoring and recognizing the achievements of Colorado girls and women in sports.
I have been blessed with an amazing board the last 25 years! I don’t see that changing because this board is expanding, growing and looking to bring in new coaches to help this organization thrive in the future.
I would be remiss without acknowledging and recognizing our past. As female athletes, coaches and administrators in Colorado, we would not be who we are and where we are without the women who blazed the trail for us FIFTY-TWO years ago. The Colorado Women’s Coaches Association (CWCA) held their first meeting on April 23rd, 1970! Their objective was “to provide equitable athletic programs for girls in high school.” Does this sound familiar? Maybe a lot like Title IX? These women were definitely ahead of the game and hopefully bolstered by the passage of Title IX!
Lately (unfortunately), I am reminded that the women who helped shape me into the advocate that I am today are leaving us. Lo Hunter and Leslie Moore are two recent examples. My charge to any and all female athletes, high school, middle school and club coaches as well as athletic administrators is this: If you are passionate about girls and women in sports and their continued growth in the Colorado, I need YOU to become an advocate! Spread the word and don’t be afraid to re-live the past to let others know WHY we exist today.
Thank you for allowing me to serve you and the girls and women in sports here in Colorado for the past 25 years!

Hailey Knowles, Meeker High School. Hailey’s immediate goal is to graduate from high school with all A’s, making her tied for number one in her class. She will enroll at Northwestern Community College in the fall and pursue a biology major. She is a 4-sport athlete at Meeker HS, competing in softball (captain), basketball (captain), track, and swimming. She has been a volunteer coach and is eager to pursue coaching after she gets her 4-year degree. Her softball coach states: “…Hailey Knowles is a player that makes every coach want to keep coaching, and every coach will always hope for players like her.”
Kylie Krise, Briggsdale High School. Kylie is a 3-sport athlete—volleyball (captain and 1st team All-State), basketball (captain), and track. She has committed to Western State University to play basketball. She plans to major in exercise science and psychology. Sports mean so much to her that she wants to coach girls “…to help them realize that they are equal to male athletes.” She wants “…to lead the next generation to making a bigger statement about how important female athletes and sports are.” Kylie is involved in many activities in and out of school. Her basketball coach says, simply, “Kylie is a leader.”
Sidnew Larrew, Swink High School. Sidney is number one in her class and an All-Conference softball and basketball player who will continue her softball career at Otero Junior College. Sidney wants to coach in high school in order to give back to the next generation of girls’ sports. She is also a state champion with her agribusiness management team. A valued employee of the Rocky Ford Knapp Farm Market, her employer states that ”…she understood the seriousness of food safety…and showed her dedication when implementing our policies…An investment in Sidney would be a great investment in the future.”
Alayah Meltabarger, Springfield High School. Alayah is a 3-sport athlete—volleyball, basketball (captain and All-Conference in both), track, and a cheerleader. She is class valedictorian and a leader in student activities. Her language arts teacher is also student council advisor and coach for volleyball and basketball. She says Alayah is well-respected, a calm presence during competition, and always positive. She organizes events meticulously, encourages her teammates by planning motivational activities, and “…will become a fantastic coach and teacher.” Alayah also works at the local nursing home and is a licensed CNA.
Sienna Mullin, Riverdale Ridge High School. Sienna comes from a coaching family and her parents have taught her the value of athletics—the life lessons that come with those experiences. She is a three-sport athlete (softball, basketball, and golf) in a large high school and will graduate in the top 5% of her class. She will further her softball career at Ft. Lewis College where she will major in a science field. She would like to coach at the college level and hopes to gain experience as a graduate assistant after she finishes her undergraduate degree. She wants to be a role model for girls and states: “…coaching is in my future.”
Alexis Pontine, Ignacio High School. Alexis is a 3-sport athlete—volleyball, soccer, and track. She has also competed (and won) in archery, cake decorating, and steer raising (reserve champion at the local fair) through 4-H. She has committed to play volleyball at McCook Community College (Nebraska) where she will begin studies in physical therapy and sports psychology. Her soccer coach states: “Alexis is willing to put in the extra time and effort it takes to do well…She is dedicated, hard-working, and responsible…She works hard in practice and encourages others to do the same...She brings an electric energy to the field…”
