Updates from the Week of March 8
Glendale Unified Will Return Elementary Students for On-Campus Instruction Beginning March 29
On March 9, the Glendale Unified Board of Education gave direction to move forward with a phased return of elementary students for on-campus instruction in late March.
- Elementary teachers will return to campuses on Tuesday, March 23
- Students in grades TK-2 will resume in-person learning on Monday, March 29
- Elementary students in grades 3-6 will resume in-person learning on Monday, April 5
The District will continue to offer a full-time distance learning option for the remainder of the school year for all families who choose to continue distance learning.
Hybrid Schedule
In order to maintain proper physical distancing, Glendale Unified elementary schools will operate on a hybrid schedule. Students returning for in-person learning will alternate between on-campus and distance learning in stable groups.
Elementary school administrators will reach out to families in the coming days with additional details and schedules for each specific school.
Child Care
Child care in the District’s Technology Learning Pods will continue to be available on days when students are distance learning. The more than 1,000 students who have been enrolled in Technology Learning Pods since the beginning of the 2020-21 school year will have priority for child care.
Middle and High School
Secondary schools are eligible to reopen when Los Angeles County has moved into the Red Tier for COVID-19 transmission. Glendale Unified has not finalized a return date for middle and high school.
In the meantime, Middle and high schools are planning on-campus expanded learning opportunities for students this spring. View an expanded learning presentation from our Glendale Unified middle school principals.
Glendale Unified is Committed to the Safety and Wellbeing of our Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities
On March 9, the Glendale Unified Board of Education adopted a resolution, Affirming the Glendale Unified Board of Education’s Commitment to the Safety and Wellbeing of our Asian American and Pacific Islander Students, Employees, Families, and Community Members and Denouncing Xenophobia Due to Fears of the Covid-19 Pandemic. This resolution comes in response to a concerning nationwide rise in hate crimes and acts of discrimination against Asian American and Pacific Islander communities over the past year. Read the full resolution here.
“One of our top priorities as a Board of Education is to foster a positive culture of learning by celebrating diversity and emphasizing inclusion on our campuses and in our community,” said Glendale Unified Board of Education President Dr. Armina Gharpetian. “As we welcome our students back to campus for in-person learning, we want to reaffirm Glendale Unified School District’s commitment to providing a safe learning environment where every child can learn and thrive.”
Working Together to Stop Hate
If you witness incidents of hate or bullying of any kind in our community or on our campuses, report the incident to a police officer or Glendale Unified school or district administrator immediately. You can also report incidents of hate against Asian American Pacific Islander community members at stopaapihate.org.
In honor of Women's History Month, Glendale Unified is working with community leaders on new initiatives to empower the female leaders of tomorrow and support women – particularly mothers – in our community.
In particular, the District is organizing a group of employee, family, and community partners to create a summer program to support women and families experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, or other financial struggles. If you are interested in joining this effort, please email Glendale Unified Communications Director Kristine Nam at knam@gusd.net.
