We will be having our Scholastic Book Fair beginning Monday, Nov. 27th through Friday, Dec. 1st, which will be held in the library during regular school hours. We will also be open during parent-teacher conferences (Nov 20-21), so please stop by and say hello.
I encourage parents to look through the book fair flier with their child and decide what they want their student to purchase, and then send the correct amount of money (include enough for tax) along with them to school. Scholastic also offers an alternative to cash called E-Wallet. Find out how to use E-Wallet by clicking on the link. There is a 7% tax for each purchase. There is also a link to the online fair, so you can shop from home, Nov. 20 - Dec 3. 25% of every online purchase during the fair directly benefits our school!

Fall has been full of fun in the library!
The 4th and 5th grades learned about Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, and how she wrote the novel when she and her friends challenged each other to write a horror story. I challenged the students to write a two-sentence horror story and we would vote for the best for each class.
3rd grade through kindergarten read seasonal stories about fall and Halloween.

¡Bienvenidos Otoño! Fall is in the air, and so is the fun and excitement of learning a new language! Fall ushers in a host of unique and exciting cultural topics, and it has been wonderful to see students so enthusiastic to learn!
As October comes to a close, all grade levels are working on a mini-culture unit about Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. This popular Latin American holiday is often confused with our Halloween, but in fact, it is all about the importance of the family. Students are learning that this ancient holiday is really a celebration of the memories and love that live on after our friends and loved ones pass away. It is the Hispanic way of honoring their families and is a combination of Aztec and contemporary traditions.
Fifth Graders will be learning about this holiday, and will also have the opportunity to make their own version of the popular Calaveras de Azúcar, or Sugar Skulls later in the school year. In addition to this mini-unit, we will continue learning our Año de Palabras vocabulary words. This month we will focus on words that we associate with the month of November.
Fourth Graders are finishing their unit on the basic school supplies in Spanish. We completed a wide variety of practice activities to allow students to utilize their new vocabulary words. It was wonderful to see how much effort they put into all of their work! This month they will be moving on from their study of the school supplies and will begin a short cultural unit on Día de los Muertos and the art of the Sugar Skull.
Third Graders are completing their Science extension unit on the migration of the Monarch Butterfly. We have discussed the characteristics of the Monarch, its migration, and the location of the overwintering areas in Mexico. We have also learned about the migration routes, and how the arrival of the Monarchs every year ties into the cultural celebration of Día de los Muertos.
Second Graders are completing their unit on the basic greetings and leave takings. We are currently learning how to introduce ourselves in Spanish, and are doing a related art project. Once that is completed, we will take a brief look at the holiday of Día de los Muertos, before moving on to our next unit on Weather and the Seasons.
First Graders were very intrigued by the customs of Día de los Muertos. They are currently working on a special project using what they learned about Calacas, or the friendly, Mexican skeletons. When completed, students will be moving on to learn the Spanish vocabulary words for members of the family.
Kindergartners have done a wonderful job of settling into the routine of Spanish class. We have been learning 2 songs to practice our greetings and color words. Be sure to ask them to sing the rojo song for you at home! We have also completed our study of the word rojo, which means red, and will be moving on to azul, or blue. We will also be learning the Spanish word círculo, which means circle.
This November, I must say how thankful I am to have the opportunity to work with each and every one of your children! Their enthusiasm and interest in the Spanish Language are a true blessing!

Happy fall, y’all!
Everything is “Falling” into place in the computer lab. The students have done a fabulous job adjusting to our new classroom expectations for this year and things are now running smoothly.
Kindergarten & 1st grade have been busy working in Wixie. This is a program where we can draw and type to create pictures, stories, and slideshows. During the month of November, we will be focusing on what we are thankful for and completing some Thanksgiving-themed projects.
2nd & 3rd graders are in the middle of their Word Processing Unit. This year is 2nd grade’s first experience using Google Docs. They are focusing on learning 10 basic word processing skills: typing; formatting font style, size, and color; using the bold, italics, underline, and highlight tools; text alignment, and adding images. 3rd graders will be reviewing these tools by typing thank you letters to someone in their lives.
4th & 5th graders are beginning their Graphic Design Units. 4th graders are working with shapes, text boxes, and various other graphic design techniques to create a visually pleasing brochure for an upcoming Social Studies unit in their classroom. Our 5th graders will be working in TinkerCad to design a Christmas Ornament. We will be printing these ornaments out using the 3D printers in our classroom and taking them home in time for the Holidays.

Fall is here and I would like to this opportunity to pass on some helpful information:
Dress for the weather
Mornings at the bus stop are often cold while later it can be quite warm at recess.
Dressing in layers will enable your child to be warm and comfortable in the ever changing weather.
Cold and Flu Season
Cold and flu season is upon us. Fortunately, we haven/t seen much flu thus far, but here are the basics that will help keep you healthy. Wash your hands frequently. Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and or sneezing. Getting a good night sleep and eating healthy foods will provide your body with the stamina it needs to get through the day and fight off viruses. If your child becomes ill and feels he or she cannot participate in all of the school’s daily activities, keep them home. Your child should be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine before returning to school. If your child is out of school for 3 or more days a doctor’s note is appreciated upon returning.
The top five most virus-contaminated areas in the home are:
Telephones (have you cleaned your cell phone lately)
Appliances such as the refrigerator and microwave
Faucets
Light switch and door handles
TV remotes

The Student Council will be sponsoring a food drive next week, November 13-17, to benefit the Richmond Food Pantry. Donation items can be brought to the classroom and will be collected by the members of the Student Council every day. Please check out the flyer below for more information.
