The Byron Buzz
News from BearNation: January 22
A Note from Dr. Neubeck
The winter months can be fun if the weather cooperates and people take the time, and have the energy, to enjoy the outdoors. However, winter can also be a trying time for many because the sun doesn't shine as much, we are not exercising as much, we catch more illnesses, and the costs of heating and other amenities can increase. We never know when a crisis may occur throughout the year; but winter, even though some say it makes us tougher, can bring a little more focus to some struggles in life. I am not only talking about students and staff individually but also for families and loved ones.
In the Byron School District, we are fortunate to have great people working for us and doing everything they can to help families make community connections to resources to meet, sometimes, the most basic needs. In our district, one of those people is Christine Jostock, a social worker. Below, you will see a small introduction about her and her services to our students and families. I encourage you to reach out to her if you are in need and allow her to "work her magic" to help. Even if you are not in need and want to be one the "angels" who want to help, please contact Christine. We are seeing more need than ever and it takes so many resources in some cases for some families. We are lucky to have staff like Christine in our community because Byron Schools, and the Byron Community, are better places because of her work.

POG C's in Action
The Profile of a Graduate is the model we use to live out the District's Strategic Plan on a daily basis. It has been 5 year since we first implemented the Profile of a Graduate and we continue to find ways to teach the six Cs: Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Citizenship, and Character.

Social Work Sidelines
Within the district I spend my time co-managing the BearPack Program, organizing Christmas Anonymous, taking care of the needs of our homeless students and families, writing the legal flags detailing family structures, distributing information about local resources that may be of benefit to families, and teaching others about a variety of topics including mental health, addiction, suicide prevention, and healthy living practices.
While my job today looks very different than it did 17 years ago, it continues to keep me busy, challenge my skills, and build relationships with the people that make up the Byron school community.
To make the best use of your time, I will begin to add any news on programs or resources to the Byron Buzz. This will allow the information to reach a larger audience while reducing the number of emails families receive each week. So as you read through The Buzz, watch for Social Work Sidelines as I will be posting important information there. As always if you have questions about any of the programs I work with or if you would like to donate to any of the programs we run in-house, please feel free to contact me at christine.jostock@byron.k12.mn.us
Smiles,
Christine

Construction Update
The construction plans continues to move forward and it will be great to watch our facilities transform over the next 18 months. It is exciting to see the progress and to think about what great facilities we will soon have for our students and our community. Please check out our webcam at https://app.oxblue.com/open/knutson/byronhsathletics and watch the time lapse pictures. We are so appreciative of the community's support.
