Year 5 UOI Snapshot
HWEO & HWOO - Term 2 2023
Welcome
Dear Year 5 Parents,
Welcome to our first Unit of Inquiry Snapshot. As part of our commitment to communicate more regularly with parents, along with the reintroduction of Seesaw, we will be sharing with you information at the beginning of each unit of inquiry in a snapshot form.
This snapshot will cover both the How We Express Ourselves and How We Organise Ourselves units, as they complement each other well and we tend to teach them as one combined unit. Please note that at the end of this term, both units will be assessed at the same time and shared with you.
We hope that you find this Snapshot of learning useful and that it gives you a better idea of what is happening in the classroom. We also hope that it will allow you to better support your child at home.
Units of Inquiry
How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea:
People can create or manipulate messages to target specific audiences.
Lines of Inquiry:
The purpose and types of media
How we use media techniques to influence and persuade
How people respond to messages
This week classes have begun the tuning-in process for our How We Express Ourselves section of the unit of inquiry. This unit is expressive arts-based, looking closely at advertisements all around us in different places and styles. We will collect adverts that we like, looking at the process in which adverts are planned, tested and developed for different audiences.
We will walk around Central HK on a media walk and start discussions in class and in Art lessons in order to plan and create a multi-modal advertisement. Shape, colour and form of commercials will also be analysed. In Music, the students will analyse the composition of jingles and create their own. This will fully prepare students for their next unit of inquiry when the students put this knowledge into practice and plan and host a product sales day in school.
How We Organise Ourselves
Central Idea:
Economic activity relies on systems of production, exchange and consumption of goods and services.
Lines of Inquiry:
The role of supply and demand
The distribution of goods and services
How economic activity affects our lives
This unit focuses around the journey a product or service takes from an idea to eventually being sold. The students will inquire into how market research works; the design process; making prototypes; the structure of businesses; the purpose of marketing and branding; profit and loss and ethical practices in business. We will be visiting Stanley Market to see marketing and sales in action. The students will be hands-on in creating a product which will be 'sold' in a Market Day at the end of the unit. They will use their knowledge of advertising from the How We Express Ourselves section to help in the process.
ENGLISH
Writing to persuade
Writing to persuade will be our focus for the remainder of Term 2, with strong links to our unit of inquiry. This will require children to develop and focus ideas in sustained paragraphs. We will use vocabulary drawn from a range of different sources to enhance our writing and respond to feedback to improve the quality of our texts. If you are trying to support at home, it would be useful to notice different texts in your environment such as newspaper articles, magazines, advertisements, websites, blogs and any other persuasive pieces you can think of!
MATHS
During this unit of inquiry students will use surveys and data collected to inform design decisions. The children will interpret data collected via market research or displayed within adverts. The main number focus will be fractions, decimals and percentages. This will prepare the children for the second part of the unit where they will learn how to calculate discounts and profit and loss.
We will also be moving onto Measurement - perimeter & area; different different units of measurement, as well as touching on Ratio & Proportion.
Fractions, Decimals & Percentages Objectives:
- Read, write, compare and order common fractions and decimal fractions to hundredths or beyond
- Understand the relationship and convert between common fractions and decimal fractions
- Simplify fractions to the lowest common denominator
- Model, read, write and compare improper fractions and mixed numbers
- Model, read, write and compare percentages understanding them as the number of parts in every 100
- Model and solve simple problems involving fractions
Ratio & Proportion Objectives:
- Model and solve simple problems involving ratio and proportion
Measurement Objectives
- Estimate, compare and measure objects using standard units of measurement: length, perimeter, mass, capacity, area, volume and temperature
- Calculate and develop rules for determining area and perimeter of rectangles
- Identify and describe the relationships between area and perimeter
- Estimate, compare and measure objects using standard units of measurement: mass, capacity, volume and temperature
- Convert between units using decimals to at least one place (e.g. change 2.6 kg to 2600 g)
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
We know that we are very lucky to have many supportive parents who wish to enhance student learning at home. The best way to do this is to review student and teacher posts on Seesaw and consolidate learning at home, as opposed to teaching what is coming up next. In this way, we can more easily share a common language in our classrooms and new concepts and ideas can be quickly adopted and built upon.
Don’t forget that students have access to Mathletics and various other resources that can be found on the school VLE. These are great for consolidating work done in the classroom.
In addition, if you work or have expertise in an area described above and you would be willing to share your experiences and knowledge, please get in touch with your class teacher and perhaps you can come in a talk to your child’s class, or even the whole year group. Real-world experience is always valuable and much appreciated.
Thank you for your continued support.
