From Mr. R's Desk
BOBCAT NATION
We are halfway through the first semester and time is ticking. Before you know it, the end of the semester will be upon us. Teachers, please take a minute to reflect on the following questions.
- How many students are failing to meet my academic expectations?
- Can I, as their teacher pinpoint the reason why students are failing?
- Is the reason a compliance issue, a learning issue, or a social-emotional issue?
- Did the student turn in all assignments/homework?
- Did the student have excessive absences? Do I know the cause?
- Did the student fail an exam? Was the student prepared?
- Did the student turn in a class project? Do I know why the student failed to turn in the project? Did I have a rubric with deadlines?
- Is there a learning issue that hasn't been addressed? What have I done about it?
- Did I reach out to the student or did just allow the student to fail?
- Is the student having personal issues? Did I call the parent?
- Has the student been referred to the counselor? If no, why not?
- Is the student having issues in other classes or just my class?
- What other interventions have I done to prevent failure?
More reflective questions by Baruti Kafele from the book titled The Teacher 50: Critical Questions for Inspiring Classroom Excellence.
- Are my students at an advantage because I am their teacher?
- Do my students have the option of failing in my classroom?
- Am I willing to accept responsibility and accountability for my student's successes and failures?
Remember, as teachers we need to ensure that we are making every effort so that all children can and will be successful.
Veterans Day Ceremony 2022
RHHS AF JROTC Cadets and the RHHS Bobcat Band will honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces during a school-wide ceremony held in the gymnasium on the 11th hour of the 11th day of November 2022. The Bobcat Band will play a specially prepared Patriotic Tribute during the ceremony. This year's guest speaker will be the Rio Hondo Independent School District Superintendent and United States Army Veteran, Mr. Raul Trevino. Additionally, the cadets will hold a special presentation in honor of a longtime Rio Grande Valley resident and Veteran, Mr. Charles Ernest "Chuck" Bothwell (1927-2021). Mr. Bothwell is the father of RHHS teacher, Mrs. Patricia Hervey and served in the United States Navy during WWII. Following the ceremony, all RHHS Veterans will be hosted in the AF JROTC Hangar for a luncheon held in their honor with the cadets.
