Hatherly Happenings

This week's story was read by guest reader, Jamele Adams. Mr. Adams read the book Stellaluna, written and illustrated by Janell Cannon. The young bat, Stellaluna, gets separated from her mother and stumbles across a bird and the bird's family. The bird family takes her in and teachers her how to live as a bird. Eventually, Stellaluna is reunited with her mother and even though she realizes how different she is from the birds they all become friends despite their many differences.

We're focusing on Reflection. With the business of our day to day lives, and the constant connection to technology, it can be hard to unplug and be present. Try setting aside a few minutes each day to just be. It could be laying on the couch with your eyes closed, staring out the window at the clouds, or sitting at the kitchen table first thing in the morning drinking coffee. The idea is to spend just a couple of minutes without phones or computers, time without talking to anyone, or getting anything done. It can be helpful at first to set a timer to remind yourself that it’s ok, it’s only 2minutes, or 5minutes out of the day. Having those moments to pause can help us be more grounded throughout the day.

Fifth graders enjoyed dissecting flowers in class. They explored the anatomy of a flower and were able to identify the different parts!

Mrs. Hughes is our music teacher at Hatherly. She grew up in Liberty, New York where she started playing the flute at age 9. She loves playing the flute so much, she still plays it every week at church! Mrs. Hughes taught elementary music in New York for 14 years before moving to Massachusetts. Mrs. Hughes lives in Duxbury with her family. Crosby who is 11 years old loves to run Ninja Warrior obstacle courses and play the French Horn. Bennett who is 7, is a HUGE baseball fan. Yes, a die hard Yankee fan! Her husband flies in a helicopter and reports for the news. She has two dogs, Ava and Ella. Mrs. Hughes spends her spare time cooking, walking on the beach, crocheting, gardening and having fun with her family. Mrs. Hughes’s favorite food is anything chocolate! Her favorite drink is matcha tea! Sparkly pink is her favorite color!
