Farm to School Newsletter
November 2022
DEAR FAMILIES & FRIENDS:
October was Farm to School Month and we celebrated with all kinds of activities! We held three more Pop Up Farmers Markets, making a total of five markets this fall! We loved seeing all the students and teachers getting excited about the fresh produce and fun activities! One kiddo exclaimed, "I wish we could have these every day!" Another student told us, "This is the best day ever!" If that doesn't bring a smile to your face, I don't know what will!
We have conducted Farm to School lessons at Buckley, Courtade, Northport and Westwoods this past month with a focus on life cycles, food chains and seed saving! Our taste tests were primarily comparing apple varieties, but at Northport the cafeteria staff roasted a Gete-Okosomin squash! This squash was grown in the hoop house from seeds we received from Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians last spring. Check out the flyer below for more information on this ancient squash!
We are starting our Lifespan, nutrition and cooking lessons, this November and look forward to sharing with you the recipes & lessons we have with our students at Buckley, Northport and Lake City! We are putting our gardens to bed right now, but the planning stages for next year will be underway this winter!
Keep enjoying the warmer weather!
