SEL in Elementary School:
In a video series called "Schools That Work," Edutopia offers some examples of social and emotional learning routines that successful schools use. At Highlander Charter School in Rhode Island, elementary school students talk about the importance of morning meeting to their day.
"It puts me in a focused and good mood," said Monica, a third grader at the school. Every morning during the 15-minute meeting, students greet each other, have sharing time, do a quick movement activity and review the schedule for the day. Educators say this routine is an invaluable way to help students transition from home to school; it helps build a community where students feel cared for, known and ready to learn.
"I like it when people share because we get to know them a little better," said first grader Dianelys. Educators at this school said carving out this time every day creates a culture in which students respect each other and their teacher.

SEL in High School
In a video series called "Schools That Work," Edutopia offers some examples of social and emotional learning routines that successful schools use. While elementary school may seem like the perfect place to learn social and emotional skills, often by high school the focus of educators and parents has turned to academics. But adolescence is a crucial time for young people to know an adult cares about them and can serve as a mentor. At Summit Preparatory Charter High School in Redwood City, California, students take a "Habits, Community, and Culture" class devoted to improving their emotional intelligence and the skills that will help them cope with stress, setbacks and crises of confidence that are typical in high school. Their teacher, Aukeem Ballard, wants each teen to feel seen, heard and known.

In the Spotlight: Daisha Oshiro
Daisha has over 18 years of experience in education and has spent the last six years here at Arizona Virtual Academy. She has worked in the special education department and also with the Family Academic Support Team during that six year period of time. Daisha is passionate about helping our families understand the rigors of online schooling. She is the Community Engagement Specialist for school year 2019-2020, and is looking forward to helping families directly as they get READY to connect, are SET for Success, and GROW in our online school.
As the Community Engagement Specialist, Daisha is hosting ZOOM Welcome Sessions to families that have an enrollment approved date and a school start date in the future. These virtual ZOOM Welcome Sessions help our families understand our school culture and expectations for our online public school students. They also provide practical tips and tools for our families as they learn to navigate our platforms. These ZOOM Welcome sessions are a type of schoolwide orientation that have proven beneficial to many floundering families not quite sure where to start or what to do next. In addition to these weekly Welcome Sessions, Daisha will provide monthly LC workshops at Blended Learning Centers, that will include key topics for our new and returning families. She will be working with learning coaches as they complete their certification in our learning coach university and will be providing the ability for our families to grow in connection with others in our school through parent mentors, parent volunteers, and more!
Learning Coach University -- PLEASE promote this to your families
Our schools are very excited to present this online class to help prepare our families for the rigors of schooling in an online public school. This is a program that families will be able to come back and reference throughout the school year, and can access this course on a computer or with mobile devices.
A family can access this course through our district website OR you can share the link below with families. This is a GREAT resource for new families and they should be encouraged to complete and get their certification. This is also a GREAT refresher for your returning families- they should also get their certification. Advisors will be notified when families have completed this as well. This is another tool to help our families get connected with our school and excited to engage.
If you have questions on this program or need further information contact Daisha Oshiro at daoshiro@k12.com.
