A Note from Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
As we move into this extended weekend, I would be remiss if I did not recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his contribution to our nation. I shall continue to stand in appreciation and gratitude for his impact on my life. I realize that there may not be a Dr. Hooks, if there had not been a Dr. King.
Hyde-Addison is prepared to reopen in-person learning opportunities at the start of Term 3, in alignment with DCPS, by:
Prioritizing Safety by putting in place robust health and safety protocols for staff and students.
Maximizing Learning by providing rigorous and joyful learning experiences every day — in school or at home.
Promoting Equity by ensuring every student has access to the supplies and supports they need for a safe return to learning.
Our community will continue to work collaboratively and extend grace and flexibility to one another during these unprecedented times. In addition to supporting staff members and CARE classroom facilitators, the following classroom teachers are slated to return in-person for Term 3: Ms. Bailey, Ms. Malloy, Mr. Severs, Ms. Walsh, and Ms. Link.
In grades K-3, if your child is in the homeroom class of a teacher who will be teaching in-person and your child is not slated to return in-person, you will receive communication from Hyde-Addison during the week of January 25 to share who their re-assigned classroom teacher will be, if relevant. Neither the simulcast model in PreK nor the CARE classrooms in grades 4 and 5 will require any changes to class assignments.
We understand many families will have questions and appreciate those who were able to join either of the Term 3 Family Information Forums that were hosted this week. If you have additional questions, please email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov for the most accurate and timely information. This will also help our teachers remain focused on providing high-quality virtual instruction throughout January.
Please keep you and your loved ones safe. For resources and information about the District of Columbia Government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) response and recovery efforts, please visit coronavirus.dc.gov. Please visit dcpsreopenstrong.com or backtoschool.dc.gov for DCPS virtual learning resources.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal

Take the Jelleff Recreation Center Survey
The Jelleff Recreation Center is scheduled to undergo a major renovation. Perkins Eastman has been hired to run a Feasibility Study to understand how the community uses the Center and what improvements we would like to see from the renovation. Meeting rooms? A gym?
Please click on the link below to fill out the survey, which will take you approximately 5 minutes to complete. You may only fill out one survey. Please note that once you start, you cannot stop and return to finish later, so we suggest finding a time when you won’t be interrupted and a place where you have good internet connection. You have until end-of-day January 18, 2021 to complete the survey.https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Jelleff2021

Make a Card for a Homebound Senior
The DC Department of Aging and Community Living would like to invite your school to participate in our Annual Cupid’s Kids campaign and help lift the spirits of homebound seniors during Valentine’s Day. This year, we are doing things a little different! In partnership with DC Public Library, we are inviting everyone in the community to help make handmade Valentine’s Day cards for isolated and homebound District seniors. Isolation during the pandemic has made it harder for seniors to stay connected and the winter months are a peak time for social isolation and loneliness for many in the District. Your school’s contribution would spread kindness to seniors, many of whom live alone, and teach students how they can make a positive impact in the community—one individual at a time.
This year’s goal is to send handmade Valentine’s Day cards to over 6,000 recipients of DACL’s home-delivered meals program. The cards will be included in the February meal delivery. We are hoping schools will pass along the toolkit to families and encourage them to make cards from home. Handmade Valentine’s Day cards will be collected at select DCPL sites. Locations are listed in the toolkit, which also includes instructions on how to make a card. You may also visit our website https://dacl.dc.gov/page/cupidskids for more information.
Looking forward to receiving your cards!
