GROWING GREATNESS through teaching student's "Responsibility"

This school year we will be focusing on a vocabulary word each month as a school. The first three months will focus on our school-wide expectations, which are: We are Respectful, We are Responsible, We are Safe. We are wrapping up the understanding of respect for the month of August. In the month of September, we will focus on "responsibility".

We will provide the definition of responsibility for students, share how it is used in sentences and show what it looks like in images. Students will learn synonyms for responsible as well as antonyms of responsible. Students will learn ways to BE Responsible.

We encourage you to help your child(ren) take on responsibilities at home in the month of September. Some examples are:

- set the table for dinner or do the dishes after dinner

- taking out the garbage

- folding laundry

- feeding the dog or cat or any pet

- keeping their bedroom cleaned up

- vacuuming the floor

- help make supper

- play with younger brother or sister while parents do something

Praise and acknowledge your child(ren) for helping out and being so responsible, especially if they do it without you having to remind them or ask them. Please do not pay them with any form of reward. The praise and acknowledgement is the reward! We are helping them build instrinsic motivation with purpose.

I would love to praise and acknowledge students myself for showing responsibility outside of school. If you wish to take a picture or video of them in action, you may send it to me at sleasure@eastnoble.net. With your permission, I would love to share our students showing responsibility on our North Side Facebook page and of course say something to your child as well.

Let's work together to build young, responsible youth of Kendallville!!!

Front Office Guidance from Mrs. Hilterbrand and Miss Myers:

*If you have not turned in your two Proofs of Residency yet, please send them into school or stop by the office for us to make copies. This is a state mandate to assure that you live in Indiana. We appreciate your support with this matter.

*Please make sure to call our office BEFORE 2:00 p.m. if you need to change your child's transportation on the way home for that day. This allows us time to share this information with both the teacher and your child before dismissal begins at 2:40 p.m. Your child's safety and making it home is our priority.

*We are accumulating a large lost and found collection already this school year. If you could put your child's name on tags of sweatshirts, hats, lunch bags, water bottles, and more; it will allow us to return these items to their rightful owner.

*Our Scholastic Book Fair will be open during parent/teacher conferences on the evening of Thursday, September 28th. We are looking for volunteers to help work the book fair. If you have a completed background check and would like to volunteer some time, please reach out to our PTO president, Heather Baker at hnbaker87@gmail.com.

In Tune with Attendance and Safety with Mr. Perlich:

Attendance:

I am excited to be off and running with the new school year. Attendance has been great so far and we hope to see that continue. Please remember to get the doctor’s notes turned in when possible. Per our East Noble Attendance Policy, letters are sent out on 3-day, 5-day, and 7-day absences. Even if you have turned in notes, letters will still come with a handwritten note from Mr. Perlich. Communication is the best way for all of us to be on the same page with the expectations. I also want to encourage you to get your students to school on time as well. When a student misses even the first 5 minutes, they are missing out on the start of the day and it could make them feel behind.

Safety:

The month of August provided us a chance to practice a fire drill and shelter-in-place. We practice drills to make sure all staff and students are prepared in case we are ever faced with an emergency. The month of September will see your students practice a fire drill, lockdown, bus evacuation, and any others that may come up. We take safety seriously and want to make sure your children feel safe while at North Side. If you should ever have questions, please feel free to reach out to me at jperlich@eastnoble.net.

The Nurse's Nook:

Upcoming clinics:

  • As we all know, our vision directly impacts our ability to learn. If you can’t see adequately, it’s going to be very difficult to learn to read and write. The state requires all children in grades K, 1, 3, 5 have their vision screened during the school year. I will be conducting vision screenings on September 5, 2023 with the assistance of our Impact health care students. I will reach out to you if your child does not pass this screening. **note: the screening performed in the school is a screening of visual acuity and does not replace an examination by a licensed professional**
  • The Noble County Health Department has offered to come to North Side on Thursday, September 7, 2023 to host a vaccination clinic for those children who are not up-to-date on their childhood immunizations. This is OPTIONAL!! No vaccines will ever be given without a signed parent consent. If your child is not up-to-date on immunizations, PLEASE take advantage of this clinic! You can sign your child up at https://patients.vaxcare.com/registration (registration code: IN17745) or contact me for a form. Registration will close September 1st.
  • “School Smiles,” the in-school dentist, will be at North Side Elementary on Monday, September 18, 2023. School Smiles provides dental exams and restorative care to your child right at school! Your child will not be seen by the dentist unless I have a signed consent form. Consent forms have been sent home; if you did not get one and would like one, please contact me at 260-347-1354 or waumsbaugh@eastnoble.net. You can also sign up online at www.schoolsmiles.com/student-signup.
  • The annual Flu vaccination clinic will be held at the end of October. Every fall the Noble County Health Department comes to all ENSC schools and provides flu vaccinations. Again, children WILL NEVER receive any vaccine without parental consent. More details to come about the annual flu vaccination clinic.

Friendly reminders:

  • Please send a change of clothes in your child’s backpack for those occasional accidents or spills. I will do my best to provide your child with a change of clothes, but if I do not have the appropriate size, I will have to call home and ask for a change of clothes.
  • Letters have gone out for those children who are not up to date on immunizations. If you have received one of these letters, please make sure you are working towards immunization compliance and contact me with any questions.
  • Your child must be fever-free, without fever-reducing medication, for 24 hours before returning to school. The same applies to vomiting and diarrhea.

Nutrition Notice with Mrs. Yates:

We are excited to be able to serve ALL North Side students free breakfast and lunch this year. Please take advantage of this opportunity. Breakfast opens at 7:30 Tuesday through Friday and 8:15 on Mondays.

We are serving birthday cake at the end of each month to celebrate everyone's birthday. We just had vanilla cake for our August birthdays. The students sure did love it!
