Landforms Affecting How People Live
How do land forms contribute to where and how people live?
THE LANDFORM REGIONS
In Canada, there are 7 landform regions.
-The Western Cordillera
-Interior Plains
-Canadian Shield
-Great Lakes- St.Lawrence Lowlands
-Appalachians
-Arctic and Hudson Bay Lowlands
-Innuitian Mountains
Our goal was to research and develop an understanding as to how do different landform regions contribute to where and how people live. We came up with the following questions to help us.
Which landform is most profitable to live in, in terms of resources?
(Isha)
How do landforms affect the activities available for people in different parts of Canada?(Sukhman)
Why are the Great Lakes St.Lawrence Lowlands highly populated?
(Harpriya)
Why dont many people live in the Western Cordillera Region?
(Jaden)
How does produce in different landforms impact where and how people live? (Tarnveer)
Which landform is most profitable to live in, in terms of resources?
>Home to many metallic minerals, which attract mining industries. It is home to lots of gold, zinc, copper, silver, and uranium. Various cities and towns, like Sudbury for example rely on this industry for jobs. Farming is not a large industry in the Shield, so crops are not its best resource. The Canadian Shield also has lots of water, so hydroelectricity is a large and common activity, many people have jobs related to this industry.
INTERIOR PLAINS
>The gas and oil found in Alberta and Saskatchewan come from the plains. Many areas are very good for farming crops and oil seeds, and these products grown are shipped to other countries. A rancher is a common job in the interior plains, so the produce grown is a major resource. Extremely rich in grain production making wheat grown more than anything,
GREAT LAKES- ST.LAWRENCE LOWLANDS
>Home to very rich soils and good climate, so agriculture is extremely ideal. Rich in fruits like pears, peaches, and grapes. Maple syrup is also common here. Also very ideal for urban development, as 70% of Canada's manufacturing industry resides in these lowlands with Toronto and Montreal.
APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS
>These mountains are extremely rich in non metallic materials, for example coal. Some areas of the mountains contain rich metallic minerals like iron and zinc. Some land areas that have been mixed with ocean water make the Atlantic provinces and Appalachian regions an extremely great ground for fishing, making fish a big resource.
INNUITIAN MOUNTAINS
>Rarely any mineral exploitation takes place here because there are cheaper areas in Canada for development. Hardly any trees, and the harsh climate makes it hard to have any resources.
HUDSON BAY- ARCTIC LOWLANDS
>These lowlands supply a poor quality of coal, but do have oil, natural gas deposits, water, and lots of wildlife. The harsh climate doesn't allow much farming.
WESTERN CORDILLERA
>The Western Cordillera provides lakes, rivers, forests, and grasslands. There are a variety of rich soils, good climate, and vegetation as well.
THIS KNOWLEDGE HELPS US DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING AS TO WHY CERTAIN PEOPLE CHOOSE CERTAIN LANDFORM REGIONS TO LIVE IN
Geographic Location of the Canadian Shield
The Appalachian Mountains
Interior Plains
Landforms are not just used for resources...they also provide an excellent assortment of things to do in Canada!
How do landforms have an influence on the activities available for people to participate in, in different parts of Canada?
WINTER/SPRING ACTIVITIES IN THE ROCKIES
>Skiing/Snowboarding > Cross-Country skiing > Gondola and Chair lift rides >Snowshoeing > Ice Skating > Sleigh Rides > Dog Sledding
SUMMER/FALL ACTIVITIES
>Hiking > Biking > Canoeing > Horseback Riding > Whitewater Rafting
ACTIVITIES IN THE GREAT LAKES AND ST.LAWRENCE LOWLANDS
>Boating > Fishing >Recreational Centres
Physical and Environmental characteristics are a big part of decision making. People should take develop ways to take advantage of opportunities, for example living near mountains you should take regular trips for hiking or jogging to get the best out of these landform regions.
Why are the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands highly populated?
The Great Lakes St Lawrence Lowlands are highly populated, with 50% of Canada's entire population within it. The cities within this region provide their citizens with complete luxury, due to the human and natural systems, and so that is why the entire region it self is highly populated.
Quebec City is an excellent factor as to why the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands are highly populated. To begin with, Quebec City has one of the lowest crime rates in North America. The areas around Quebec City are also known to be very safe. Continuing this further, Quebec City is in a great location. The city is in a relief position with the Laurentian Mountains nearby. Furthermore, Quebec City has an amazing history. The city has an area called Old Quebec City, which is the only fortified urban district in North America. The streets of the old city, are full have 400 years worth of history. Lastly, Quebec has an interesting climate. The city lies at the boundaries of several climate regions. Summers are warm and humid, and winters are very cold and often windy. Quebec also has one of the highest average yearly snow fall amounts in Canada. Due to these factors, Quebec is an important factor as to why land forms contribute to where and how people live.
Ottawa is another important factor as to why the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands are highly populated. To begin with Ottawa has an excellent education system. The students in the city score higher than provincial averages, in areas of reading, writing and mathematics. Continuing this further, Ottawa has excellent medical facilities and world class health care. The city has a special hospital, the Royal Ottawa Hospital, that provides mental health care. Ottawa has a great ratio of doctors to patients, with 2.64 doctors for every 1 000 people, which is much higher than the Canadian average of 2.20 doctors for every 1 000 people. Furthermore, Ottawa has a significant amount of open spaces. Ottawa is known for it's greenery and choices it offers for strolls or bike rides in natural areas. There are over 1 000 parks in the city and 4 beaches. The city is surrounded by natural areas including Gatineau Park and The Ottawa Greenbelt. Lastly, Ottawa has an interesting climate. The city has a semi-continental climate with warm, humid summers and very cold winters. Winters in Ottawa are severe with great depths of snow every year. Due to these factors, Ottawa is another reason as to why the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands are highly populated.
The glaciers that formed the Great Lakes Lowland portion of the entire Lowlands carried huge amounts of soil, sand and gravel, and distributed them throughout the land form region. These materials formed flat plains with glacial hills and deep river valleys. The Great Lakes are located in basins that were gouged out by glaciers. At one point, the Great Lakes were much larger than they are today because of the huge amount of water from the melting glaciers. Today, the lakes have shrank to their size because a lot of the water from the melting glaciers has drained into the ocean. The old shorelines of these glacial lakes surround today's Great Lakes. Most of Canada's population lives on the shorelines of Lake Ontario, in the city Toronto, all because of the natural system of glaciation, that has occurred in the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands. Due to the natural system of glaciation, the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands are highly populated.
Overall, the region is greatly suited to agriculture because of its excellent soils and warm climate. The flat land of the region is ideal for transportation routes and the development of cities. Therefore, due to the warm climate, excellent soils, flat land, transportation routes and development of cities, the region is the most densely populated region in Canada. 70% of Canada's manufacturing industries are located in this region, which is another reason as to why the region is highly populated. An interesting fact is that 50% of Canada's population lives in the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands, even though the land is 1.4% of Canada's total area. Due to these factors, the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands are highly populated.
