Around the School Spotlight
Our 3rd graders all got their very own dictionaries today and there was a lot of excitement about them! Three women from the Beta Beta Education Foundation come each year and donate them to our third grade classes. We really appreciate their generosity!
Attendance Notifications/Updates
Starting next week, all elementary students will be receiving an attendance report that outlines current attendance. Elementary families will receive this report every 6 weeks via email. There's a very strong correlation between good attendance and success in school. On the other hand, students who regularly miss school are also more likely to struggle in school (Oregon Department of Education). Illnesses, travel and other circumstances for kids being out of school add up and every day makes a difference. Please let us know how we can partner with you if you find your child is struggling to be at school.
Again, these reports are meant to be informative and are sent to all families. You do not need to contact the school unless you would benefit from support for your child. Thank you!
Note: The attendance report will come from a do not reply email address (Sherwood School District Mailer) so there’s a chance it may end up in your junk folder.
Lockdown Drill in October
Our school will be participating in our first lockdown drill of the school year during the month of October. Lockdown drills are an essential part of our emergency preparedness, and help students and staff to practice specific actions that would occur in an emergency situation. Practice drills such as these are also an opportunity for our administrators and staff to collaborate with the Sherwood Police Department to continue improving our safety plans. You may notice increased police presence if you are on/near our campus during a lockdown drill, as our SROs do participate in checking our building security during the drill.
During drills, staff and students are secured within their individual classrooms/offices, and there is no movement in the building. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the drill has been completed.
For more information on District emergency response protocols and communication, please visit the SSD website here.
One For Books!
Have spare change laying around?! Find out how your child can help build his/her classroom library with loose change by clicking here. Teachers will use the coins collected next week to buy books for the book fair. We will also have teacher wish lists if you prefer to donate a specific book.
We need volunteers to help with the Book Fair. You can find the sign up sheet here. Check out our Media Center page for a link to the Book Fair homepage, which includes a link to the volunteer sign sheet as well. You must have a cleared background check prior to volunteering.
STEM News
All of our Hawks View students just completed a three week unit on coding. Kinders and first graders used the Sphero indi robot and its tiles to build a foundation for more difficult coding in the coming years. Second through Fifth graders used Dash robots and the Blockly app to build programs that were basic to more complex depending on the prior coding skills of the student. Feel free to ask your students about what new coding knowledge they gained in Unit 2.
Unit 3 is beginning soon, and all grade levels will be focusing on science standards. Kinder students will be learning about pushes and pulls as they work with teammates to construct marble tracks and catapults to observe different types of forces in action. First and Second graders will be exploring sound and vibration. They will be taking home a rain stick that they created in class along with other activities to explore sound and vibration.Third graders will be experimenting with balanced and unbalanced forces through cooperative games and engineering materials. Fourth and fifth graders will be working on a science unit focusing on electrical energy transfer and transformation. Students will be bringing home a circuit card that they created at the end of this unit.

Head Lice Reminders
Please be aware that head lice is a community concern and can be spread in many ways. With cold weather in the near future, it is important to remember a common way lice is spread is through the sharing of hats and clothing. This can mean trying items on at department stores, borrowing items from others, cloth chairs/couches and even vehicle seats. Please take the time to check the heads of family members on a regular basis and treat if needed, as well as let the office know so that we can take any necessary precautions here at school.
Information on treatments can be found on the District website (scroll down) as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with what is needed to eliminate them in the household.
Reminder - Meal Program Eligibility Expires Oct 12!
As a reminder, all Meal Program Eligibility from the 2022-23 school year expires on October 12. To ensure your child's access to free/reduced email eligibility continues for the rest of the 2023-24 school year, all families must submit a new application for the current year. The current Meal Application for School Year 2023-2024 can be found here.
If you have already completed a 2023-24 application but need to confirm your eligibility, please contact Nutrition Services at nutrition@sherwood.k12.or.us. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

National School Lunch Week - October 9-13
Next week is National School Lunch Week! This week celebrates the National School Lunch Program, which provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or no-cost lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act, signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1946.
Here in the Sherwood School District, our Nutrition Services team served approximately 220,000 school meals to our students last year! We encourage our students to take a moment next week to thank our cafeteria teams for all that they do to provide healthy meals in our schools.
