Advice to Families of Seniors
Senior Seminar students from the Class of 2022 discussed how their families can support them throughout their college search and application process. Check out this week's advice!
Top 10 things parents should do when their kid is going off to college
- Support them no matter what: Your kid should do whatever their heart wants. You might as well support them and let them know you care.
- Help them find what's best for them: This could be finding a college that's right for your kid or just talking about what will help.
- Encourage but not to your benefit: When encouraging, don't think about yourself but think about them and what would best benefit them.
- Help with scheduling: During this time it is very stressful and there are a lot of deadlines, a non-stressful schedule could help a lot.
- Listen: When talking about college it can be scary and stressful, if you don't listen to your kids' wants and needs this will make it 10 times harder.
- Talk about your experience: Talking to someone about their college experience can make a scared teen feel a lot better about going. If you went to college, tell your kid about it and what you liked/disliked.
- DO NOT GUILT: Of all the things, do not guilt your kid into not going to college, going away, staying home, anything. This will make it so much harder for them to leave and they won't choose what they really want to do in order to not disappoint you.
- Fill out the FAFSA: Whoever you are or how much money you make, fill out the FAFSA. Free money is free money.
- Go on college tours: Make a day and go tour a college your senior is interested in.
- Talk to your counselor: Talking to your kid's counselor will make it easier on both of you. You can ask more detailed questions about college and your counselor can help.

Varsity Cross Country
by Ava DeVlaminck
This past weekend the Dryden Cross Country team had their very first home meet! The team and past teams have been looking forward to this for so long, and so many people helped. Thank you to everyone that helped to make our home course such an awesome course!
Although the weather wasn't ideal, the team ran great! On the girls' side, Audrey Napolitano ran 23:46, Lily Finnigan ran 25:41, and Ava DeVlaminck ran 26:47.
On the boys' side, Aiden Fitchett ran 18:06, coming in second, Noah Hall ran 20:48, Jackson Spencer ran 21:30, Connor Wolff ran 23:15, Matthew Hickmott ran 24:08, Tyler Biggs ran 28:00, and Matthew Livingston ran 28:11. Great job to both teams and good luck at regionals!
Varsity Cheer
This past Friday, the Imlay City/ Dryden cheerleaders cheered for Imlay City’s varsity football team’s last game of this season in Kettering University’s stadium, in Flint, Michigan. The game resulted in a win against Flint Southwestern Academy. The girls had one stunt group that perfectly completed their stunts. The game was a very somber last game with the seniors and last of the season for all of the girls. Great job this season, girls!
As the last week of football cheerleading comes to a close, Imlay City cheerleaders are already preparing for a very eventful Competitive Cheerleading season during the winter season. Imlay City will be hosting the first BWAC league competition of the season on January 12, 2022.

Macomb Community College
Even though Teri could only talk to us virtually, I feel like it was still very helpful and I learned a lot about community colleges. Everyone always talks down on community colleges, but she gave us many positives to going to Macomb for a year or a summer to help earn credits.
During her slideshow, I mainly remember her telling us what a huge money difference it is between community colleges and universities. By the end of your four years, you need a certain amount of credits, and taking a few courses through Macomb would help so you don't have to be taking so many classes at the same time.
She also didn't just give us information about Macomb. she also gave us lots of useful information about college in general and how to help pay, things like FAFSA and applying for scholarships and how to do so.
Another thing Dryden is familiar with is dual enrollment, which a lot of us are taking right now. She went into a deeper conversation about it and what it means to be taking classes like that.
Teri also showed us a slideshow as she talked with fun pictures about everything she was talking about and one slide had all of the admission officers on it, which gets us more familiar with the people we are sending our applications to. Teri is our main one at Dryden and she's been doing it for a long time now, so she knows what she's talking about I learned a lot about Macomb and online classes. Even though it was virtual, I still found it very interesting and informative to all my questions about college.

Raghan DeLong
by Ariela Perales
Raghan is a 7th grader who has been in Dryden for about 4 years. Raghan’s favorite hobby is Volleyball. Her favorite thing about Dryden is the teachers are somewhat nice, she has a good amount of friends here, and they want to understand the material being covered. Raghan likes to fish, play volleyball, hang out with friends and family, and just be outside in general. When Raghan gets older, her dream is to be a firefighter. When she gets into high school, Raghan is looking forward to doing more intense volleyball and most of the events. Some other things she likes to do are go on walks, play with her dogs, show cows, play with her pigs and take them for walks, have bonfires, and explore nature. Good luck, Raghan!
