September, 2023
Hello Wildcat Families,
Our first week and a half of school has been wonderful! I've loved getting to know our littlest and newest Wildcats and seeing how much the rest of our Wildcats have grown over the summer. The teachers have been busy teaching the students procedures and routines, as well as getting a baseline for where the students are at the start of the year. We've thoroughly enjoyed having our classrooms full of students again and seeing them engaged in their classroom activities! We can't wait to see how much they learn and grow this year! Thank you to all of the families that have agreed to help with the Labor Day Parade. This is a wonderful event that is so beneficial for the local schools, and for the community. I hope you will all come out and enjoy the parade on Monday, September 4th!

Labor Day Parade
The Annual Nicolaus Labor Day Parade is coming up soon! This is a wonderful community event and a generous fundraiser for all of the local schools. It will be held on Monday, September 4th. The theme this year is "A Slice of America". The parade will begin at 10:00am and there will be great vendors there throughout the day. Our Parents' Club will be running the hamburger booth to raise money for school, so be sure to stop by and grab a delicious burger! There will also be a great kids area at the parade this year, including fun booths that benefit Marcum's 8th Graders who will be going to DC; we hope our Wildcat families stop by and support them. There will also be bounce houses (including water ones, so don't forget clothes that can get wet) and more in the kids area! Also, many booths will only except Cash, so don't forget to bring some!
Student Council
Student Leadership is very important at Marcum. We want the students to be able to be a part of making decisions about things we do here at school and we also want them to be able to experience the different facets of leadership. We will be holding elections for our Student Council Positions this Friday, September 1st starting at 2:15. Students in 7th and 8th grade are eligible to run for various Student Council positions including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations, and more. Students in 6th grade are eligible to run for Class Representative. We are looking forward to hearing our students give their speeches and to seeing who our elected representatives will be.
School Site Council Nominees
We are looking for individuals for Marcum’s School Site Council! This is a great opportunity to have input on the health, safety, and learning experiences of our students. If you are interested, contact Mrs. Brazil (courtneyb@sutter.k12.ca.us)! Please see the flyer for more information.
Destination Imagination
We'd love to bring Destination Imagination (DI) back to Marcum! If your child is creative, likes to build, solve problems, act, or needs a challenge for their mind – then DI is for them! This extracurricular, educational program provides teams of students from kindergarten through university level an outlet for their creativity. Teams of students learn leadership, teamwork, positive thinking, project management and so much more by working to solve a selected challenge and present it at a
competition! If your student is interested in joining a team, or if you are interested in being a team manager (which is an essential need for each team), please contact Mrs. Brazil at
Teacher Collaboration Update
The first early release Monday of the school year was a great start to collaboration and professional development time for our teachers. Teachers reviewed their essential math standards and worked in grade span teams to discuss which prerequisite skills will be most important to focus on in intervention to set students up for success in the first chapters/units of the year. Throughout September, teachers will look at initial classroom and MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) test data to identify needs and place students into intervention groups. The TK-2nd grade span will collaborate on best practices for utilizing centers in the classroom, and 3rd-8th grade will be introduced to Smarter Balance Assessment practice tools. At the end of the month, we will be looking at best practices around teaching writing at the various levels. We look forward to seeing how this time supports the success of our students!
California Junior Scholarship Federation
Marcum is pleased to continue as an official chapter of the California Junior Scholarship Federation. CJSF is a non-profit organization that emphasizes academic excellence, scholarship and community service among California middle school students. CJSF encourages service to the school and community while fostering pride in scholastic achievement. Student membership is based on academic excellence and citizenship. Only 7th and 8th grade students are eligible to apply and must apply after each grading period a student is eligible. Current 8th graders have the opportunity to apply using last year’s grades. Applications are due September 8th. Mrs. Brazil is our CJSF Advisor. Please contact her if you have any questions.
Shirts
All of our Wildcats will get House Shirts and new Marcum Shirts again this year. We are hoping that they will be here soon so we can show off our school pride and our House Colors. Students who still have old shirts are encouraged to continue to wear them. At Marcum, we wear our Blue and Gold Marcum Shirt on Thursdays and our House Shirt on Fridays. We can’t wait until our new shirts arrive!
Marcum Parents' Club Update
Marcum Parents' Club's next meeting is September 14th at 6:00pm. We hope to see you there! Parents' Club will begin collecting costume donations for the Costume Exchange in September and the Costume Exchange will take place during the second week of October. More information will be shared as the event gets closer. Parents' Club will also be hosting a Family Movie Night on October 13th. Look for a flyer soon, but go ahead and mark your calendars now!
