Transportation Update
All of the general education buses servicing Pathfinder have been canceled.
A reminder from Friday's message, Vincent (father of a Kestrel) organized sign ups for routes! Lets share the load to make sure all Pathfinder students are able to get to school! Please note, at the school level we are unable to manage this spreadsheet.
Middle school ORCA cards will be distributed as soon as we receive them. All middle school students were given a temporary paper pass that is valid for this upcoming school week only.

Family Based Racial Equity Committee
The Harvest: Notes and Themes from Pathfinder's Inaugural Community Cafe Overview:
On Friday, October 15, 2021, Black Families, Indigenous Families, Families of Color, and Multiracial Families gathered for Pathfinder's first Community Cafe. Community Cafes are new at Pathfinder this year, arising from the Racial Equity Questionnaire conducted by your family-based Racial Equity Committee (REC) in the 2020-2021 school year.
The Community Cafes are designed to be a series of conversations for families to share experiences, seek support, and build community. This "Harvest" is a summary of our first conversation and will be provided to the whole Pathfinder community following each Community Cafe.
We invite you to participate in REC's next initiative which is The Pledge (please see details below), being launched today!
Shared Experiences:
Families reported that their scholars are:
- not feeling represented in the curriculum and books, particularly Asian American families.
- experiencing negative racially focused comments on the playground and at school, and do not feel included or emotionally safe in our Pathfinder community.
- feeling pressured to racially identify themselves ("white passing", biracial, multiracial,
- etc.).
- not feeling that they are treated the same as their white-presenting classmates
- at school.
- feeling they are expected to be a "model minority".
- finding it difficult to connect with other families at Pathfinder.
- feeling that Pathfinder feels physically safe, but not always emotionally.
- Families expressed that there is a missing piece in our Social-Emotional Learning: Race Education.
- Families wondered how we as a community can support teachers in addressing race related incidences directly and in the moment with scholars (DEI training, etc.).
- There was discussion about working together as a community to ensure that our Black Scholars, Indigenous Scholars, Scholars of Color, and Multiracial Scholars also experience the privilege of feeling respected and emotionally safe at school.
- Families wondered if there is a standard way all teachers could communicate with parents ahead of time when a sensitive lesson will be presented and discussed in school so that they have the opportunity to prepare their scholar and follow up with their scholars.
- Families reported the desire for an increase in the exploration and celebration of a diversity of countries and cultures (through books, instruments, food, etc.), in hopes of normalizing all cultures and offering more immersive cultural experiences.
- Families reported the desire for more diversity of curriculum and books at schoolso scholars have the exposure and opportunity to learn about other countries and cultures, particularly Asian American history.
- Families asked for a safe space for their scholars to gather as a community.
- Families wondered how this awareness of our scholars' negative experiences could
- Be shared with the larger community.

We encourage you to participate in our PTSA community! Here are three ways to get involved:
PTSA Website and Class Groups – We've added a members-only "Community" section to the PTSA website. You can connect directly with parents in your child’s class as well as other Pathfinder families.
Become a site member: You will receive an email from “Pathfinder K-8 PTSA” or <webops@pathfinderk8ptsa.org>. Follow the instructions in the email to create an account on the Pathfinder K-8 PTSA website (you do not need to be a PTSA member to access the site).
Connect with your class: Once you have created an account and are logged in, select “Groups” and Request Access to your child’s class to connect with other parents in your class.
Join the Pathfinder PTSA! Visit bit.ly/PTSAJoinUs to join the PTSA and help amplify your voice
Volunteer as a Class Coordinator!! Keep everyone in the loop by volunteering as the coordinator for your class. Email Jennifer Girou at classcoordinator@pathfinderk8ptsa.org if you can help with this crucial role.

Indigenous Peoples Day
October is Disability Awareness Month
Check out the Seattle Special Education PTSA page. Four amazing volunteers curated the books, podcasts, videos, articles, and other posts. One reading room is for younger students and one is for teens and adults. You can click on any object and be taken to a source about disability history -- even the plants!
October Principle - Restorative Justice
Restorative justice is the commitment to build a beloved and loving community that is sustainable and growing.
We know that if you hurt somebody, you have to help them feel better; you can’t just say “sorry,” and walk away. We also know that its important for kids to be able to make a better choice another time, and it’s grownups’ job to help them make better choices and to give them chances to do that. Another way to say that is restorative justice.

Dr. Holmes' Incoming Goals
- To know all folx personally and professionally connected to the school. Further, allow others to know me as fully as possible outside day to day connection, crisis, and problem solving.
- To use qualitative and quantitative data to determine concerns and issues regarding improving student performance that needs to be closely examined and addressed to repay the educational debt.
- To learn the artifacts, beliefs, and basic underlying assumptions through engaging in essential conversations with Pathfinder students, staff, and community.
- To identify, hold onto, and strengthen traditions that center students and bring the community together. Further, partner with students, staff, and the community to ensure social emotional learning and growth is embedded in the curriculum, adult strengths are highlighted, and we have fun!
