June 1st Grade News
Library Media
First graders are spending the end of their year in library participating in various reading, makerspace, and technology centers. Students are doing a great job with the new routine and are enjoying having the variety of activities. Activities have including coding, listening to stories on the iPad, using drawing or look and find books, and book exploration.
Summer reading information will be coming home in June but all families should have received a flyer about the book swap. Students are asked to bring in 2-5 gentle used books. At the book swap, our hope is to send all students home with 2 books. Please bring your book donations into the library by the end of May. Thank you!
Also please note that the last day for book check out was Friday May 26th. All books are due back to the library no later than Friday June 2nd.
Thank you for all your support this year, we can't wait to see everyone back as 2nd graders!

Music
During the past month, some first grade classes have finished learning new notes and rhythms for the year, while others will finish in the coming weeks. By the end of the school year, all first graders will know how to read, write, and perform quarter and eighth note rhythms as well as the notes mi, sol, and la! Aside from note and rhythm reading, some classes got to experiment with playing songs on “boom whackers” which are colorful plastic tubes tuned to various notes. They tried composing their own music using the instruments as well. Others got to participate in a “sound story” activity where they added instruments or body sounds to various words in a story. During the final weeks of the year, students will play games to review note and rhythm reading, such as “Music Telephone”, “Summer Rhythms”, “Forbidden Rhythm”, and “So-la-mi”.
I would like to thank you all for sharing your wonderful students with me this year! It has been a great privilege to watch their creativity, self-awareness and musical expression grow throughout the year. I look forward to continuing music class with all of your students next year and hope that you have a wonderful summer! Make some time to dance and sing while you are enjoying your time together this summer!

Art
What fun it has been to explore the use of paint to create various colors!
The first grade in Miss Pinto’s art room have been learning all about PRIMARY and SECONDARY colors.
What happens when we mix the PRIMARY colors in different combinations? How about red and yellow, yellow and blue, and blue and red?! We get the SECONDARY colors, orange, green and purple.
The students all were then challenged to imagine and depict their favorite imagery of the spring time, and paint with ONLY the three primary colors. They even discovered how to make aquamarine, red-orange, and even brown and shared their discoveries with each other with great enthusiasm! Mixing colors is so exciting and happens right before our eyes! The students all worked hard on filling in their masterpieces.
You will also begin to see their CLAY MONSTER SCULPTURES coming home this week and next week!!! The students learned all about glazing and how glaze is NOT paint, because it turns the surface of clay to GLASS! The students and I discussed the ingredients and how “glass” is made, and some first graders already knew that SAND melts into GLASS! They will all be so excited when the Kiln transforms and melts the sand, turning it to a glassy surface, and reveal the exciting glazing colors of their sculptures!
