Monday Mental Health Minute
The Mental Health team at Oak Grove, consisting of two School Social Workers, two School Psychologists, and the Social Emotional Learning Coordinator, will be providing you information on several social emotional topics throughout the 2020-21 school year. Twice a month, we will provide you with a brief overview of a topic as well as at least one resource for additional information. Please feel free to reach out Ryan Murray, SEL Coordinator, if you have questions or need help finding more information.
This week's topic is Adverse Childhood Experiences. Related to the last Mental Health Minute about stress, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that happen in childhood that could have lifelong impacts if the child is not adequately supported through them. Some examples of ACEs are experiencing violence or neglect, death of a significant person, or high levels of instability in the home. These traumatic events have the potential to cause long term health consequences, such as higher rates of chronic illness, risky behaviors, and mental health concerns. Although some stressors in life cannot be avoided, the long term consequences can be minimized by providing children with the following:
- Strengthening relationships between children and supportive, caring adults.
- Increasing community supports, such as quality public education and creating family-friendly workplace policies
- Reducing use of punitive measures and instead problem solving to resolve an issue
- Actively teaching social/emotional skills and coping strategies
If you need assistance with minimizing the impacts of ACEs in your child’s life, please reach out for help. Please see below for more information on ACEs and how to minimize their impact to create better long term outcomes for all children.

Erin's Law Reminder
Oak Grove families,
This letter is to remind you that Oak Grove will be implementing Erin's Law the week of December 7th - 11th. Erin’s law will be provided to all Oak grove students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Erin’s Law is an Illinois state requirement and unit within our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum. This will be our sixth year of covering these requirements.
Erin’s Law requires that all public schools in Illinois implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program which teaches:
- Students in grades pre-K – 8th grade age-appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and tell a trusted adult.
- All school personnel about child sexual abuse.
- All families about the warning signs of child sexual abuse, information to support sexually abused children, and where to find support.

If you have any questions about how Erin’s Law is being implemented or do not want your child(ren) to participate please contact Ryan Murray at murray@ogschool.org or 847-367-4120 ext. 2708. Thank you for your support in addressing this sensitive topic with your child(ren).

Eagles @Home Curbside Pickup
Just a reminder, the curriculum materials pickup dates for our @Home families are this week on Wednesday, December 2nd and Thursday, December 3rd. Since we do not have in person dismissal, pickups will begin at 2 pm and end at 5 pm. If you are unable to come in during your scheduled window of time, please contact the front office, ogsofficestaff@ogschool.org to coordinate a different day/time. Be sure to have your child's name and grade written clearly for our staff to see.
We ask that you please return the large reusable bag that you were given at last month's pickup. Each family has been ordered two reusable bags so that we are able to rotate them for the monthly pickups. Thank you for your help!
