PARENTS - THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING PARENT/ TEACHER CONFERENCE NIGHT!
If you were unable to meet with your child's teachers on Thursday night, remember that there are still a few ways you can be involved in your child's education.
1. Check Schoology weekly - if you don't have a Schoology parent account, please sign up for one. Our Technology Specialist will email you directions for creating this account. When students are held accountable for missing assignments by their parents, grades improve.
2. Communicate with Teachers - Our website contains a page with links to all staff email addresses (Click on "Our School" and "Staff Directory"). If you were unable to meet with a teacher this week, consider sending an email to teachers asking about your child's progress or ways you can help them become stronger students at home.
3. Be Mindful of Interim Report & Report Card Dates - Our next interim reports will go out on November 15th and the end of the 2nd nine weeks is December 21st. Consider posting these dates on home calendars and reminding your child often.

HELPING YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOLER LEARN HOW TO STUDY
Middle school is a critical juncture in a student's academic journey. It's the period when students are introduced to more complex subjects and are expected to take on greater responsibility for their learning. However, one common challenge parents often encounter is that many middle school students don't know how to study effectively. In this article, we'll explore why students struggle with studying and provide practical tips for parents to help their children create good lifelong study habits for academic success.
Why Middle School Students Struggle with Studying
Many students haven't been taught how to study effectively. They may not understand the importance of breaking down material into manageable chunks, making study schedules, or using active learning strategies. Middle school students are also at an age when distractions are abundant. Procrastination can be a significant issue, as they often prefer instant gratification from social media or games over delayed academic rewards. The transition to middle school can be daunting. Students face multiple classes, teachers, and subjects, which can lead to overwhelming feelings. In addition, middle school students may not have fully developed their memory and organizational skills, making it harder to remember and structure their study materials effectively. Emotionally, the fear of not doing well or not meeting expectations can lead to anxiety and avoidance when it comes to studying.
Practical Tips for Parents to Help Students Develop Good Study Habits
Create a Study-Friendly Environment: Designate a quiet, organized space for your child to study. Remove distractions such as TV or video games and provide necessary study materials like pens, paper, and a computer if needed.
Set Realistic Goals: Encourage your child to set achievable goals for each study session. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable portions can make studying less overwhelming.
Teach Time Management: Help your child develop time management skills by creating a study schedule. Ensure they allocate enough time for each subject and include short breaks for rest. Teach them how to take a long-term project and break it into manageable chunks.
Encourage Active Learning: Instead of passively reading or highlighting text, suggest active learning techniques like summarizing, questioning, or teaching the material to someone else. These methods help retain information better.
Foster a Growth Mindset: Teach your child that it's okay to make mistakes and that learning from them is a valuable part of the process. Encourage a growth mindset where they see challenges as opportunities for growth.
Offer Guidance, But Don't Do It For Them: Be available to answer questions or offer assistance when needed, but avoid doing their work for them. Encourage independent problem-solving and critical thinking.
Provide Positive Reinforcement: Praise your child for their efforts and improvements, not just for getting high grades. This positive reinforcement can boost their self-esteem and motivation to study.
Show Interest and Communicate: Ask your child about their day, their studies, and any challenges they're facing. Listen actively and provide guidance as necessary. Strong communication can help you understand their needs and concerns.
Lead by Example: Demonstrate good study habits yourself. When your child sees you engaging in focused, productive work, they are more likely to emulate your behavior.
Seek Extra Help if Needed: If your child consistently struggles with a specific subject or study technique, don't hesitate to seek additional help, such as tutoring or assistance from teachers or counselors.
Middle school is a pivotal time in a student's educational journey, and parents play a crucial role in helping their children develop good study habits. By understanding the challenges middle school students face and employing practical strategies, parents can empower their children to become self-reliant learners, setting the stage for academic success and lifelong study skills. With patience, support, and guidance, you can help your middle schooler thrive academically and build a foundation for a bright future.
